Equity and Diversity

Welcome

We welcome you to WSU Vancouver in the homeland of Chinookan and Taidnapam peoples and the Cowlitz Indian Tribe. The Office of Equity and Diversity provides direction for WSU Vancouver’s strategic imperative to promote an ethical and socially just society through an intentional commitment to equity, diversity and inclusion.

Strategic Equity Objectives

WSU Vancouver is dedicated to actualizing the following objectives:

  1. Closing the opportunity gap by ensuring equitable opportunities and outcomes for all student populations, including comparable retention and graduation rates across demographic groups.
  2. Increasing capacity for institutional change and working toward equity in all aspects of campus endeavors.
  3. Building and maintaining a campus climate that provides a safe, affirming and welcoming environment for all employees and students.

Centering Race and Holding SPACE

The Office of Equity and Diversity recognizes intersections of multiple social identities (e.g., race, gender, class, sexual orientation, ability, age, etc.) and centers race because inequities are most pervasive and harmful when controlled for race across interlocking social systems, structures and everyday experiences (e.g., education, employment, healthcare, housing, law enforcement, etc.).

These inequities did not just happen, but originate from historical, sociocultural and sociopolitical circumstances that continue present day to replicate and perpetuate systems of oppression (including systemic racism) that disproportionately impact Black people, Indigenous people, People of Color, and historically underrepresented people.

The Office of Equity and Diversity creates and takes up SPACE, a cohesive and strengths-based framework comprised of 5 action pillars that assists in dismantling systemic racism and oppression, constructing an antiracist foundation, promoting inclusive excellence, and building a community of equity, diversity, inclusion, belonging and justice at WSU Vancouver.
