Advising survey

History

In Fall of 2007, the WSU Vancouver Retention Task Force developed a vision of Academic Advising describing the roles and contributions of students, advisors, and the institutional administration to that process. In order to determine how well our campus was meeting that vision and to assist in planning for possible improvements to the advising system, a Survey of Academic Advising was administered to a representative sample of students during the Spring of 2008.

In 2009, VAC developed a one page paper survey that was given to all students after their advising session, by department personnel. The survey was given every year until 2011. In 2013, the survey was updated and administered online for the first time. The Assessment Committee determined that in order to avoid survey fatigue, they would only survey students every other academic year, which began in the Fall semester of 2013.

Purpose of Assessment:

The purpose of this assessment is to evaluate the student’s experience of academic advising relative to their expectations. We believe strongly that by examining how our work matches up with student expectations we can be better advisors and more effectively serve our students and Washington State University Vancouver. The results of this are designed to inform internal improvement of advising practice with no intent of comparing one department to another. As each area of the university has different challenges and different solutions to those challenges, such comparisons are inherently inaccurate. We do hope that the process of assessing our work will help us identify areas for improvement and best practices that can be shared across the campus.
