Postdoctoral Research Associate

Washington State University (the Vancouver campus)

Postdoc fellowships in the beautiful Portland/Vancouver metropolitan area exploring machining characteristics of carbon fiber fabrics and space composites. This position is available in the laboratory of Professor Dave Kim (Mechanical Engineering) at Washington State University Vancouver. The post-doc will work closely with industry partners in the US (Innovative Composites Engineering) and South Korea (Korean Air, High In Tech, Korea Institute of Industrial Technology). Responsibilities include participating in a team-oriented project focused on investigating machining characteristics of carbon fiber fabrics and carbon fiber reinforced composites (CFRPs) in aerospace/space applications; developing and conducting machining experiments; analyzing and modeling machining characteristics; mentoring graduate and undergraduate students in the laboratory; and developing and/or contributing to project products, including reports, journal articles, and presentations.

The position is located in Vancouver, WA, near Portland, OR, and a 3-hour drive south of Seattle. The position is initially available for one year, with renewal dependent on need and/or if additional funding is secured. The position is available immediately and will remain open until filled.

This is a temporary position expected to begin on January 1, 2023, and end on December 31, 2023. Renewal is dependent on the need for extension and/or if additional funding is secured to extend employment.

Minimum requirements:

Required Qualifications:

• Ph.D. in mechanical engineering or a related field

• Ph.D. candidate who has not yet completed a Ph.D. but has a scheduled defense date may be considered.

• Research experience in manufacturing, mechanics, and/or materials.

• Good organizational skills, good written and oral communication skills, and the ability to work collaboratively with industry partners.
