Washington State University (WSU) Vancouver invites applications for Collections and Technical Services Library Faculty, a twelve-month, full-time, tenure-track position to begin July 1, 2020. Salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience. Benefits are competitive.

 

WSU Vancouver Library supports the research and scholarship of the students and faculty at the Vancouver campus. The Library combines physical and digital collections, robust document delivery services and user-focused public services to continually build and adapt to WSU Vancouver’s dynamic and growing environment. As part of the WSU Libraries multi-campus system, collaboration and strong partnerships are central to our work.

 

This position is part of a team that acquires, maintains, and assesses library collections in support of learning, teaching, and research in alignment with the strategic directions of the campus and the Library. Under the general supervision of the Library Director, the Collections and Technical Services faculty member supports the learning and teaching goals of the campus community through the life cycle management of print and electronic resources and the development and maintenance of local library technologies. As tenure-track faculty, this librarian will develop and execute a research agenda and participate in the libraries, campus and community service.

JOB DUTIES and RESPONSIBILITIES

60% Collections & Technical Services

• Work with university and library colleagues to ensure current collections meet the needs of an evolving and growing campus, with a diversity of viewpoints, interests, needs, and perspectives, and are in support of the Campus and Library’s strategic plans.

• Participate in the life cycle of collection activities (acquisitions, cataloging, and withdrawal) while considering collection, user, and space needs

• Supervise, evaluate, and lead one full-time library staff and participate in the supervision of part-time student or temporary employees.

• Contribute to ongoing review and documentation of workflows for efficiency and effectiveness with the collections management team.

• Ensure consistent access to the Library’s electronic resources by overseeing the Library’s electronic resource management systems and associated metadata.

• Stay current with emerging trends and best practices related to collection development, cataloging & technical services.

• Make recommendations for budget allocations and expenditures to build collections in all formats that meet the needs of our users.

• Gather and evaluate data from multiple sources, including usage data, collection and expenditure data, and other data as needed for both decision-making and reporting.

• Interact and negotiate with library faculty from all WSU libraries, state-wide, and the Orbis-Cascade Alliance Consortium for selection and evaluation of library resources.

• Document policies and procedures to ensure consistent practices.

10% Manage Library Technologies

• Coordinate the acquisition, maintenance and troubleshooting of various library technologies in both public and staff areas.

• Supervise part-time student or temporary employee(s).

20% Research and Publication

• As a tenure-track member of the library faculty, the successful candidate is expected to pursue an active and ongoing program of research, publication and professional development. Preferred broad areas of research are:

10% Service

• Represent the Vancouver Library and/or WSU Libraries on committees as requested.

• Actively participate in the campus, the SW Washington community and the profession.

Minimum requirements:

• ALA-accredited MLS, MLIS, or equivalent by time of appointment.

• Demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion.

• Experience in at least one of the following: management of electronic resources, collection development, technologies used in acquisitions, collection management or technical services.

• Evidence of successful management and maintenance of technologies.

• Interest in working with faculty and students in one of the following areas: nursing, business, sciences, engineering & computer science.

• Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.

• Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively.

• Ability to be flexible in response to changing needs and priorities.

• Interest in developing and executing a research agenda.

Preferred qualifications:

• Willingness to take risks and adopt successful experimental approaches.

• One year of experience in collections or technical services in an academic library.

• Demonstrated ability to analyze, implement and manage new technologies.

• Research interests which fit within one of the following broad categories:

• Equity & Inclusion in Library Collections & Services.

• Understanding physical spaces and their relationship to academic success.
