Technology Resources

Workshops

Throughout the Fall and Spring semesters, Vancouver Information Services offers a long list of technology workshops that are free to WSU Vancouver students, faculty, and staff. These workshops are a great resource and are recommended to anyone who is interested in broadening his or her technological knowledge in short, easily digestable classes. More information is available here.

SkillSoft

All WSU students are able to access the extensive online training available through the SkillSoft E-Learning software. To access these resources, you will need to log in with your Network ID on a Windows-based computer.

Free and Discounted Software

FTP: An FTP program is necessary for those who want to transfer files to the school Web server. Windows users may want to use the free CoreFTP LE while a good (and free) FTP program for Macintosh users is Fugu. Connections to the school's main Web server require a secure FTP connection (SFTP) which both of these provide. The student Web server allows both regular FTP and Secure FTP.

Terminal: Those who wish to connect to our Web server through the command line to manipulate/edit files directly on the server will need a terminal emulator. Windows users can download and use Microsoft Secure Shell Client for free. Macintosh users running OS X have a built-in terminal program called Terminal. It's located in the Utilities folder inside the Applications folder.

Antivirus: All current WSU students may download Symantec Antivirus software for free and use it on their personal computers while they are students at the University. This software is available by logging in to myWSU. Version checking and download instructions
For faculty and staff who have borrowed the cd from our office, installation instructions are available here.

Microsoft: Several Microsoft applications (not including Office) are also available through the MyWSU page. Log in using your Network ID, click on the "Tech Tools" link on the left navigation bar, follow the link to MSDN Academic Alliance, then follow the instructions to download software. You may then choose to download or pay for the software to be sent to you for a small fee. If this is your first time logging in to MyWSU, you will need to complete the MyWSU setup before continuing on to the Tech Tools section. In addition, other software that is not available for free is available at a discount from E-Academy.
