How to Use FTP

The following instructions are written for students using the FTP program. Faculty and Staff instruction that differ follow each instruction and are marked For Faculty/Staff.

Opening FTP

1. Open the FTP program.
2. In the Host Session dialog box enter the following information:
• Profile Name: wsu vancouver
• Host Name: helium.vancouver.wsu.edu

For Faculty/Staff: Host Name: boron.vancouver.wsu.edu
• Host Type: Automatic detect
• User ID: your UNIX (e-mail) login name
• Password: your UNIX (e-mail) password
• leave all other areas blank.

Your screen should look similar to the screen above.

Transferring Files into your UNIX (e-mail) Account

1. Click on Okay or hit the Enter key.
2. In the FTP dialog box use the following instructions:
• On the left side of the box, use the scroll bar to look for the a: drive (your floppy disk) under the top section called Local System.

For Faculty/Staff: the file you wish to transfer may be in another directory. Change directories until you find the file.
• Double click on a: or click once to select the a: drive and click on the ChgDir (change directory) button.
• locate the file you want to transfer and click once on it to select it.
• Click on the right arrow in the middle of the dialog box to transfer the file to your e-mail account under the lower right section called Remote System. The file is now in your Unix account and ready to use as an e-mail attachment.

The ftp screen should look similar to the above picture.

Transferring Files out of your UNIX (e-mail) Account

1. Open FTP.
2. In the FTP dialog box use the following instructions:
• On the left side of the box, use the scroll bar to look for the a: drive under the top section called Local System.
• Double click on a: or click once to select the a: drive and click on the ChgDir (change directory) button.
• Locate the file you want to transfer on the Right side of the screen in the list of your UNIX account files.
• Click once on it to select it.
• Click on the LEFT arrow in the middle of the dialog box to transfer the file to your floppy disk under the lower left section called Local System.

Open WORD and open your file from the floppy disk to read it.
