Step 1. Creating your Web Directory and Permissions

NOTE: You only need to run this command if your Unix account was created after May 1, 2003. Only run this command the very first time; Do Not run it everytime you want to load pages.

To be able to load and view your web pages on the student server, you will need to create the web directory and set the permissions for your directory. This is a very simple step of opening a secure telnet session, logging in and typing in a command that will do these steps for you.

1. Open a secure telnet session by opening secure Teraterm or from the command line.

Secure Teraterm: this a software telnet client that you can download, install and use on your home computer. The program is already installed on all student computer lab computers. To download the software and for instructions on using it go to http://www.vancouver.wsu.edu/vis/vit/security.htm#table This table will allow you to choose your operating system and has links to the instructions for installation. Windows XP users can safely install the W#indows 98 version.

Logging into Secure Teraterm: Once you have the software installed, open the program. At the login screen, type in your unix account login and password and click okay. You should get the white screen with your login name and the dollar sign prompt.

Typing the command: At the dollar sign prompt, type the following command. Be sure to type it exactly as written without the quotes, "makeStudentWeb" This command will then create the www directory and change permissions on your account to allow access to the web server on the student server (helium). NOTE: only run this command once.

2. Exit the Teraterm session by typing Exit at the dollar sign prompt. You are ready now to use FTP to load your web pages.

Step 2. Opening FTP

  1. Open the FTP program by clicking on the start button, then go to Programs, then go to FTP or by double clicking on the FTP icon.
  2. In the Host Session dialog box enter the following information:

Your screen should look like the screen above.
