General Appropriate Use Statement

Computing resources and network access are provided to support the University's goals of instruction, research, and extension. Any use of WSU computing and network resources must be in accordance with current federal, state, and Washington State University regulations. Willful misuse of any computing resources can result in termination of access privileges, disciplinary actions, and/or civil and criminal penalties.

Federal and state laws prohibit unauthorized access to or use of computer systems, duplication of copyright material, and unauthorized disclosure of confidential information. In addition, State Executive Order 91-10 specifically prohibits the transmission of any information that promotes discrimination on the basis of age, sex, marital status, race, creed, color, national origin, sensory, mental, or physical handicap, or sexual preference; sexual harassment; copyright infringement; personal political beliefs or personal business interest; or any unlawful activity.

Each person is responsible for all activity that occurs on computer accounts assigned to them.

Web Page Size

Currently students are allowed up to 3 megabytes of server space for web pages. Academic projects that require more than 3 megabytes of space must be negotiated with instructors and Vancouver Information Services.

Time Policy

Student web pages will remain on WSU Vancouver servers while students are currently enrolled or are active students.

Illegal Activities

Any illegal activity will be investigated and reported to the proper authorities. This may include departmental officials, WSU Student Affairs, the Attorney General, Campus Police, FBI, Internet Computer Emergency Response Team (CERT) at Carnegie-Mellon University, and other network and system administrators.

Complaints from Other Computer or Network Users

Complaints of inappropriate use (junk mail, "who are you" messages, etc. . . ) will be investigated and corrective action will be taken. This may include loss of computing privileges. Complaints of illegal activities (which may include sexual harassment, abusive language, unauthorized access, password cracking, or unauthorized copying of files or software) will be investigated and reported to the proper authorities.

Use of Departmental Equipment

Microcomputers and terminals located in WSU department facilities are not usually available except to that department's faculty, staff, and students. Contact the department office for permission before using any departmental computing resources.

Personal Use of WSU Computers and Networks

Network access and computer resources may not be used for any business or commercial enterprise. This includes business endeavors that result in personal gain (typing services, mailing lists, etc. . . ). Violators can be prosecuted under state and federal law, as well as Washington State University sanctions.
