Creating Spam Filters in Web Mail

Step 1: Creating or Subscribing to a Folder

  1. Log into web mail
  2. Either subscribe to an existing PINE mail box to send the spam to or create a new mailbox (folder).
    1. To subscribe to an existing PINE folder:
      1. Click on the Folder link at the top of the screen
      2. Click on the Show Unsubscribed link on the top right-side of the screen.
      3. Scroll through the list until you find the folder you want to use for this filter.
      4. Click in the check box next to that folder.
      5. Click on the Choose Action dropdown menu at the top of the list.
      6. Click on Subscribe to Folder(s).
      7. Click on the Hide Unsubscribed link at the top right-side of the screen and confirm that you can now see the folder you just subscribed to. This folder will always be visible now when you use web mail.
    2. To create a new folder:
      1. Click on the Folder link at the top of the screen
      2. Click on the Choose Action dropdown menu.
      3. Click on Create New
      4. Type in a name for your new folder (for example: spam).
      5. Click the okay button. You should see the new folder in your list. This new folder will also be created for your PINE email.

Step 2: Creating the Spam Filter

  1. Click on Options link at top
  2. Click on the Word Filters under Mail Management
  3. click in all three check boxes under the Edit your filter rules link.
  4. Click on the save Options button.
  5. click on Edit Filter Rules link
  6. Choose #2 under Filter Rules
  7. Type in ***spam*** in the text field under Rule Definition
  8. Choose move message to under the Action field
  9. Click on the drop down menu and choose the folder you want to move the spam to (you may need to create a new folder. to do that see step 1.)
  10. Click on the Modify button under the Rule Definition section.
  11. Click on the Apply All Rules button at the top of the screen

    You will immediately see the spam messages that were filtered to the mailbox you choose. The rest of your inbox in below that list. You will need to scroll to see it.

    You will notice that all of the ***spam*** that was filtered is marked to be deleted. You can now click on the purge deleted link and get rid of these from the inbox.

    They will still be in the "spam" mailbox you chose to move them to.
    Anytime you want to see what is in that box to either save the message or delete them for good, you just click on the Folders link at the top of your screen. The click on the "spam" mailbox you want to see.
