Filtering PINE Email

Filtering is a way to automatically move certain messages from one folderto another or to automatically delete messages. You may alsoAutomatically set the state (Important, Deleted, ...) of messages. Pine doesn't have the ability to forward mail to another address. To filter messages that are flagged as spam in the subject line with ***spam***, use the template in the Pine spam filter document.

Step One:  Log Into Pine

1.      Open a telnet session by either:

a.       Clicking on the telnet or terra term icon, or

b.      Clicking on the start menu, clicking on run, typing in telnet boron.vancouver.wsu.edu

2.      Enter your email username and password

3.      Click okay or press the enter key.

4.      Type pine at the dollar sign prompt $

You will now be at the Main Menu for PINE email

NOTE:  remember, pine is an all keyboard command program; you won't be using your mouse.

Step Two:  To configure filtering:

1.      Press S for setup

2.      Press R for rules

3.      Press F for filters.

Step Three:  Adding a filter:

1.      Press A for add

2.      Name your filter: 

a.       Use the Arrow keys to move to the first option "Nickname"

b.      Press C to change the value. 

c.       Type in a name for your filter.  For example, this filter will be named mylist

d.      Press enter key to accept.


3.      Use arrow keys to go down to the line "From pattern:" This is where you will put the email address for messages you want to filter.

4.      Press C for change value

5.      Type in the email address.  For example, if you wanted to filter all messages coming from a listserv called mylist@yahoo.com, you would type in mylist@yahoo.com in this area.

6.      Press Return key to accept.

Step Four:  Setting the rules:

1.      Use arrow keys to go down to each of the rules to be set:

2.      Leave each of the following alone - that is the default that is already chosen can be left there:

·        Current Folder Setting

·        Message is Important

·        Message is New

·        Message is Deleted

·        Message is Answered

3.      As you learn more about filters in Pine, you can decide how you want the above rules to be set.

Step Five:  Setting the Action for your filter:

     1.  To select new options for your filter:

            a.  Use the arrow keys to move to the option you want to select.

            b.  Type an asterisk (Shift + 8) in the box next to the desired option.

     2.  Filter Action - what you want to happen to messages from mylist@yahoo.com

a.       Use arrow key to move to (highlight) your option.

b.      Delete - highlight this option if you want all messages from mylist@yahoo.com to be automatically deleted.


c.       Move - highlight this option if you want all messages from mylist@yahoo.com to be automatically moved to another folder. 

1.      Use arrow key to go to Folder list underneath the Move option. 

2.      Press C to change the value (telling pine which folder to move the messages to).

3.      Type in the name of the folder you want the messages to go to.  This can be an existing folder or you can type in a new folder name. 

     3.  Leave all other Action setting as they are.

Step Six:  Exiting and Saving your filter

1.      Press E to exit Setup.

2.      Press Y to save the new settings.

3.      Press Y to create the new folder.  If you created new folders for your filter, you will now be asked if you want pine to create the new folder.

Changing your filter rule:

1.      Follow Step One and Step Two, if you need to edit the filter rules .

2.      Use the arrow keys to highlight a filter

3.      Press C to change the filter.

4.      Follow the rest of the steps above to make changes.

You can have any number of filter rules.
