How to Use FETCH

The following instructions are written for students using the FETCH program. A Faculty and Staff instruction that differs from the student instruction is located after each student instruction and is marked For Faculty/Staff.

Opening FETCH

  1. Double click on the FETCH icon to open the program, or use the FIND feature in the FILE menu and type in the word fetch to find where the program is located on your computer.
  2. In the dialog box, enter the following information:

  3. Click on OK or Press the ENTER key. You may get a screen that tells you there is an error; ignore it and click on OK. You will see the screen that lists the files in your UNIX account.

Transferring Files into your UNIX (E-Mail) Account

  1. Click on PUT FILE.
  2. Use the arrow in the box at the top of the FETCH screen, to go to the desktop and in the list shown, find your floppy disk.
    For Faculty/Staff: You may be putting the file in another directory or on your desktop. Just find the place you want to put the file.
  3. Double click on the disk icon.

  4. Highlight the file you want to transfer and click on OPEN.
  5. Click on the arrow box next the FORMAT: to find the different file formats.
  6. Choose RAW DATA. This allows the file to be read by most other computer programs.

  7. Click OK. The file is now in your UNIX account and you can use the file as an e-mail attachment.

Transferring Files out of your UNIX (e-mail) Account

  1. Save the e-mail attachment in PINE.
  2. Open FETCH. You will see the list of your UNIX account files.
  3. Find and highlight the file you want to transfer.
  4. Click on GET FILES.
  5. Double click on the floppy disk icon. You can change the name of the file if you want.

  6. Click on SAVE.
  7. Open the file from your floppy as you would to read it.
