E-Mailing Attachments Using PINE

Sending an Attachment

The PINE systen cannot attach non-Unix files to e-mail messages. Therefore, non-Unix files must be moved into your Unix (e-mail) account before they can be sent as e-mail attachements. Use FTP on a PC, or Fetch on a Macintosh to move the file you want to use as an attachment into your UNIX account. Instructions for attaching files using FTP or FETCH are as follows:
  1. Open Secure Shell (SSH).
  2. Type in your e-mail login name at the login prompt.
  3. Press the ENTER key.
  4. Type in your e-mail password at the password prompt.
  5. Press the ENTER key.
  6. Press the ENTER key once more when TERM=(vt100) appears on the screen.
  7. Type the word pine (all lower case letters) at the $ prompt. This will take you into the PINE Main Menu screen.
  8. Go to COMPOSE.
  9. Fill in the header information.
  10. At the ATTACHMENT line do the following:
  11. a. Press CTRL-J to add an attachment. If you know the name and location of the file, you can enter it in the question box.  

    b. Press CTRL-T to go to your list of files in your e-mail account.

    Your list should appear somewhat like the above picture.
  12. Use the arrow keys to go to the file you want to transfer.
  13. Press the ENTER key. You will be taken back to the COMPOSE screen and in the question box, asked if you want to attach a comment to the attachment. Do so if you want, or press the ENTER key. Your attached file now appears on the ATTACHMENT line in the header information.

    Your screen should look like the above picture.
  15. You can now complete your e-mail and press CTRL-X to send it.

Receiving an Attachment

  1. Open Secure Shell.
  2. Open PINE.
  3. Open the INBOX and the mail message with the attachment.
  4. Press V to view the attachment.
  5. Press S to save the attachment. The file is saved in your e-mail account. You may want to change the name of the file to make it easier to remember. Do not change the file directory path.
  6. Press the ENTER key.
  7. Press E to exit the viewer. Press M for Main Menu and Q for Quit.
  8. Use the FTP program or the FETCH program to transfer the file to your floppy disk.
  9. Open the file from your disk as you normally would to read it.
