Academic Reinstatement Rules
Washington State University expects students to maintain academic standards of excellence and make satisfactory academic progress toward their degree objectives. Undergraduate students are in good academic standing if both their current WSU semester and cumulative grade point averages are 2.00 or above. Students not meeting the criteria above are considered academically deficient.
Reinstatement Process
- Check grades on myWSU
- Read the message sent by SALC to your myWSU portal page. This message identifies the regulation under which you are deficient.
Rule 38
First semester with below a 2.0 semester or cumulative gpa
- Complete a reinstatement application, including a personal statement. Details.
- Contact the Student Resource Center or your academic department to schedule a reinstatement interview. Please Note: You may be required to provide your reinstatement application in advance of your appointment.
- You must document attendance in any summer school courses, whether at WSU or another institution.
- Grades earned in summer school will be reviewed and the reinstatement decision can be reversed if conditions regarding summer grades are not met.
- Courses for the next semester (excluding summer) will be cancelled if an application has not been received and approved.
Rule 39.2
Students deficient under Rule 39 with most recent semester gpa above a 2.0
- Complete a reinstatement application, including a personal statement. Details.

- You must document attendance in any summer school courses, whether at WSU or another institution.

Rule 39
Students with any two semesters below a 2.0 semester or cumulative gpa
- Students will be dismissed and courses for the next semester (excluding summer) will be cancelled.
- Students who are dismissed are required to remain out of WSU for at least one academic year.
- Students may continue to take summer courses at WSU. Enrollment in WSU Summer Session will not be cancelled. These grades may be used as evidence of success when applying for reinstatement at a later time.
- Students with unusual extenuating circumstances may apply to be considered for early reinstatement by the Reinstatement Board. To learn more, contact the Student Resource Center.
Application Fees:
- $50.00 for first time reinstatement application
- $75.00 for second or subsequent application
