Student Handbook — Public Safety Information

While WSU Vancouver is a very safe place to work or attend school, no community can be totally risk free in today's sometimes-violent society. WSU Vancouver is subject to the same problems that occur in any city or on any other campus. As such, WSU Vancouver takes many common-sense precautions for safety, and expects students and employees to do the same. Crimes take place in our society at large, and the problem does not magically disappear at the edge of the campus. Theft, assaults, and other violations of the law do sometimes occur at WSU Vancouver and in the surrounding community.

Accordingly, all members of the community are encouraged to take ownership for their own personal safety and for the safety of others by taking a proactive approach to crime prevention on campus. The Department of Public Safety is a fully commissioned Police Department in the State of Washington. In partnership with other campus departments and the student government, we are here to assist all members of the WSU Vancouver community through education, awareness, prevention, intervention, referrals, and, if necessary, enforcement actions. However, the vast majority of incidents on campus can be avoided if employees and students recognize that they can become victims and take some basic precautions, such as walking in groups at night, not leaving personal property unattended, and by keeping vehicles and office doors locked.

If you see something suspicious (i.e., a person or vehicles), a crime in progress, a hazardous condition, or you are the victim of a crime, please report the occurrence by dialing 911 from any campus phone. The Department of Public Safety also provides several free non-emergency services to the campus community, such as safety escorts, auto-lockouts, and jump-starts. You are also encouraged to attend any of the department-sponsored events throughout the year or to contact any member of the Public Safety staff for assistance or information about your safety on campus.

The following information is provided to increase awareness of current programs and provide information to protect everyone's safety and well being. This information is provided in compliance with the federal Jeanny Cleary Act, formerly known as the Student Right-to-Know and Campus Security Act (20 U.S.C. 1092f) and Washington State, R.C.W. 28B.10.569.

Crime Statistics

The Department of Public Safety is a professional, full-service agency providing all of the services normally provided by local municipal police, plus many services unique to an academic institution. The department has both commissioned police officers and non-commissioned community service officers. All commissioned police officers have full law enforcement powers and work closely with local, state, and federal agencies to investigate crimes and criminal activity.

The Department of Public Safety promotes crime prevention among members of the campus community through information sessions, brochures, posters, building and grounds security evaluations. News releases are also made when incidents occur that might endanger personal and property safety.
