Peer Mentorship Program at WSU Vancouver
What Is It?
The goal of the Peer Mentorship Program at Washington State University Vancouver is to connect newly admitted students with a Peer mentor student who has already experienced the transition to college life on our campus. The Peer mentor will help the new student learn the skills needed to overcome obstacles they may encounter as they move towards graduating with their degree.
How are Students Selected to be Mentored?
All incoming freshman and transfer students will be encouraged to apply to the program. Notification of the opportunity will be sent to these students early in August each year. The Peer Mentorship Program desires to serve those students who are most likely to benefit from having a peer mentor. The program is open to all students, but will only be able to serve a maximum of 12 students each year.
Who are the Mentors?
Mentors are current veteran junior and senior status students on the WSU Vancouver campus who have been trained in the necessary knowledge of college resources available to students, communication skills to foster active listening and effective collaboration and problem solving, and general leadership skills to maintain the highest level of professionalism and ethics in mentoring. Mentors should consider themselves in service to both the students they will be mentoring and WSU Vancouver.
What are the Benefits of Being a Mentor?
Along with a strong sense of fulfillment from "giving back" to a fellow student, Peer mentors will gain valuable skills they can carry with them for the rest of their life through training and development in communication, coaching, facilitation, leadership, time management, and organization. Peer mentors will also earn 1 credit each semester and $1,000 for use with college expenses.
What do Mentors do?
The mentor's main goal is to assist new students in developing useful skills and strategies to navigate through college and improve their chance of succeeding to degree completion. During their one year of service, each mentor will be expected to commit approximately 9-12 hours/ month to the mentorship program and enroll in a 1 credit class. Mentors will meet with their new student(s) at least twice/ month, hold scheduled office hours, and also attend planned group activities. Continued training will be provided for mentors throughout the school year.
