What is the Washington State University Vancouver Student Ambassador Program?

The WSU Vancouver Student Ambassador Program is a group of outstanding students who are selected to represent the University to prospective students, their families and the community at large.

Who are the Student Ambassadors?

The most qualified and diverse students from a variety of majors will be chosen to work together to build on our University's outstanding reputation and bring future Cougars to our campus. Students must anticipate a graduation date of May 2010 or later.

What duties are performed by the Student Ambassadors?

Student Ambassadors represent WSU Vancouver and its many entities, both on and off campus. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Provide campus tours
  • Attend recruiting events
  • Connect with students who have specific questions about our campus community
  • Server as ROAR (Orientation) leaders
  • Assist new students in their transition to WSU Vancouver
  • Promote opportunities to be actively involved on campus
  • Advance the ideals of higher education through community outreach efforts

What responsibilities do the Student Ambassadors fulfill?

  • Ambassadors dedicate an average of six hours per week for the academic year—fall semester 2009 and spring semester 2010. In addition, they serve as ROAR (Orientation) Leaders during summer 2009.
  • Ambassadors must enroll in a two credit student leadership class offered Fridays during fall semester and attend regular training sessions on Fridays during spring semester.

Selection Criteria

Selection Process:

Students must anticipate a graduation date of May 2010 or later.

Paper applications are carefully screened and roughly half of the candidates are selected to participate in the group interview phase. Of the group interviewees, less than half are selected to participate in the individual interview phase. Final selection of 10-12 Ambassadors is made from the individual interviews.

Academic Success:

Grades are just one factor considered in the selection of Student Ambassadors. The selection committee will review each applicant's GPA along with the other information such as the written application and the interview process. Students must have at least a 2.0 cumulative GPA.

Course Load:

Students must be enrolled in at least 6 semester credits per semester at WSU Vancouver.

Leadership and Communication:

The written application and interview process are designed to assess each candidate's leadership potential and communication skills.

Time Commitment:

Applicants for the Student Ambassador Program will only be considered if they can meet the time commitments listed below.

  • Spring 2009 Initial group meetings - 4/24: 1pm-3pm and 5/1: 1pm-3pm
  • Summer 2009 Training/Orientation Days - 6/23-6/26, 7/9-7/10, 7/30-7/31, 8/6-8/7, 8/17-8/19
  • Leadership Class - Friday mornings during fall semester 2009
  • Meetings - Regularly scheduled during spring semester 2010
  • Serve an average of six hours per week during the school year (during the course of the school year some weeks require significantly more and some will be fewer than 6 hours)
  • Serve the entire 2009-2010 school year
