Tucker Balaam: (May 2003 grad, B.S. Biology) As an undergraduate at WSU Vancouver, Tucker was a recipient of a National Institutes of Health fellowship to work with WSU faculty member Dr. Christine Portfors. Dr. Portfors is a neuroscientist whose work involves understanding the neural mechanisms used by bats and mice to analyze complex sounds. Omar Canaday:

Humanitarian Award/Brown-Neuberger Leadership Award/Wake Forest Medical School

Omar Canaday: (December 2002 grad, B.S. Biology) As an undergraduate at WSU Vancouver, Omar received the 2003 Humanitarian Award. The award honors students, alumni and organizations of WSU Vancouver who contribute to the community with their time, actions, and dedication. Omar began his studies at Wake Forest Medical School in Fall 2003.

Dorin Colibaseanu:

MD Resident, Mayo Clinic

Dorin Colibaseanu: (Aug 2002 grad, B.S. Biology) Graduated with M.D. from UW Medical School in May 2007. As an undergraduate, Dorin was selected to attend Healthcare Adventures in Medicine and Science (HAMS), sponsored by the Office of Diversity and Multicultural Affairs at Oregon Health & Science University (summer, 2002). HAMS is a competitive one-week summer enrichment program which allows students to shadow health care and science professionals, use clinical equipment, and attend classes similar to those taught at OHSU's professional and graduate programs. Students attended classes and workshops which covered application, interview, and academic preparation for a career in Health Science.

Dorin also received a National Institutes of Health fellowship to attend the Introduction to Biomedical Research Program sponsored by the National Institutes of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) in Bethesda, MD in February 2002.

Dorin finished his M.D. degree at the University of Washington Medical School in May 2007 and is now a resident at the Mayo Clinic.

Susie Conley:

Laurence B. Peters scholarship

Susie Conley: (May 2002 grad, B.S. Biology) As a graduate student, Susie received the Washington State University College of Education Laurence B. Peters scholarship.

In July, 2002 Susie participated in the StarNet: Research Experiences for Students and Teachers workshop at the University of Washington Seattle Campus. The StarNet Project is funded by the National Institute on Drug Abuse, and involves high school and community college biology instructors and their student in authentic research related to the genetics of drug abuse.

May, 2003 Susie accepted a Science teaching position with Camas High School.

Donald Cox:

Washington State University Research Fellowship/College of Veterinary Medicine, Washington State University

Donald Cox: (December 2002 grad, B.S. Biology). In 2003, Don was the recipient of a Summer Research Fellowship from the WSU School of Veterinary Medicine to participate in research with John Hennebold, Ph.D., at the Oregon National Primate Research Center, Portland, OR (see website for more info: http://onprc.ohsu.edu/discovery/dspScientistsItem.cfm?doc_id=127

Don has completed his D.V.M. at Washington State University School of Veterinary Medicine and a Master of Public Health at Yale University.

Shawn Demehri:

USA Biology Olympiad, 2003; School of Medicine, Washington University

Shawn Demehri: (May 2004 grad, B.S. Biology) While an undergraduate at WSU Vancouver, Shawn was appointed a member of the Academic Committee for the USA Biology Olympiad for 2003. Sponsored by the Center for Excellence in Education, the USA Biology Olympiad (USABO) is the premier competition in biology in the United States. (http://www.cee.org/usabo/index.shtml).

Shawn began his studies as an M.D./Ph.D. student at Washington University, St. Louis in fall 2004.

Ike Ekeya:

WSU College of Pharmacy

Ike Ekeya (2007 grad, B.S. Biology): As an undergraduate at WSU Vancouver, Ike served as a campus Student Ambassador (http://www.vancouver.wsu.edu/ss/ambassador.htm).  Ike was accepted to the Doctor of Pharmacy program at Washington State University College of Pharmacy and began his studies there in fall 2007.

Richard Felix:

Richard Felix: (Aug 2002 grad, B. S. Biology) Richard completed a Master of Science in Zoology in the laboratory of Dr. Christine Portfors (WSU Vancouver) in August, 2005. As an undergraduate, Richard received a National Institutes of Health fellowship to work with Dr. Portfors. Richard is now a Ph.D. student at West Virginia University School of Medicine.

Madeleine Fry:

School of Pharmacy, The University of Washington

Madeleine Fry (B.S. Biology, 2004) As an undergraduate at WSU Vancouver, Madeleine was chosen to serve as a Science Program Ambassador. She was also the recipient of two graduation awards: Science Program Banner Carrier and Science Program Service Award.

Madeline began her studies at the University of Washington School of Pharmacy in fall 2004.

Leif Kanooth:

Kansas City College of Osteopathic Medicine

Leif graduated in May 2006 with the B.S. in Biology, Magna Cum Laude. He entered Kansas City College of Osteopathic Medicine in fall 2007.

Emanuel Pauwels:

OHSU Medical School

Accepted to Oregon Health Sciences University Medical School and began his studies there in fall 2007. He graduated from WSU Vancouver with a B.S. Biology in 2005 and was the recipient of the Harold F. and Beatrice A. Boutwell Endowed Scholarship and the East Vancouver Business Association Scholarship for the 2004-2005 academic year.

Emanuel received two summer fellowships (2004,2005) through the Neurological Sciences Institute at Oregon Health and Sciences University, where he worked in the laboratory of Dr. Grazyna Adamus.
