Humanities

The Bachelor of Arts in Humanities is an interdisciplinary liberal arts degree program in which students combine study in English with study in a second humanities field, a social science field (including anthropology, political science, psychology, sociology, criminal justice, history or women's studies), business or human development. Students may also combine digital technology and culture, history or women's studies with a second field of study in either English or Humanities and earn a BA in Humanities. The program emphasizes analysis, synthesis, and communications skills that are increasingly in demand in southwest Washington's rapidly evolving economy and offers a way to train for a variety of careers or graduate and professional programs.

As the only college in southwest Washington to offer a bachelor's degree in Humanities, WSU Vancouver balances the research emphasis of a large university with the commitment to teaching of a small liberal arts college. A WSU degree carries the prestige of one of the nation's leading teaching and research universities.

Undergraduate Program Requirements

The Humanities major requires the completion of 39 semester credits - 21 of which must be upper division. The minimum GPA for course work in the major is 2.0.

Students can organize the course work in one of two ways:

  • They can either work in two complimentary areas earning a minimum of 24 credits in one, and at least 15 credits in the other.

  • Or, students can combine three closely related areas, earning at least 9 credits in each of the three areas and at least 39 overall.

A student could, for instance, earn 24 credits in History and 15 credits in English, or combine courses from Digital Technology and Culture, History, and Women's Studies. These are only two of many possible combinations.

Currently, WSU Vancouver Humanities majors can choose their major concentrations from the following areas:

  • Digital Technology and Culture
  • English
  • History
  • Women's Studies

Students can also use any of the above or any of the following areas for their minor concentration:

  • Anthropology
  • Business
  • Criminal Justice
  • Environmental Science
  • Human Development
  • Political Science
  • Professional Writing
  • Psychology
  • Public Affairs
