Students planning to complete the B.A. in English at WSU Vancouver are required to complete the following curriculum:

Prerequisites - One of the following (or an approved substitute):

Humanities 101: Humanities in the Ancient World

Humanities 103: Mythology

Foundation Courses
(2 courses, 6 credit hours) - One of the following (or an approved substitute):

Engl 108: Introduction to Literature

Engl 199: English Composition and Literature (Honors)

Engl 209: Readings in English Literature

Engl 210: Readings in American Literature


One of the following:
Engl 302: Writing About Literature


Upper-Division Requirements
(10 courses, 30 credit hours)


Four Courses in English Literature (at least three before 1900) At least one of the following:

Engl 305: Shakespeare (Shakespearean drama to 1600)

Engl 306: Shakespeare (Shakespearean drama after 1600)


At least one of the following:

Engl 383: Chaucer and Medieval Literature

Engl 384: English Literature of the 16th Century

Engl 385: Milton and English Literature of the 17th Century

Engl 386: English Literature of the Restoration and 18th Century


At least one of the following:

Engl 387: English Romantic Literature

Engl 388: Victorian Literature*

Engl 389: Modern British Literature


One additional course in English Literature (drawn from Engl 366, 383-388, 305, 306, or appropriate 332, 333, 334)

*If Engl 389 elected above, this course must be in literature prior to 1900.


Two courses in American Literature (at least one in literature prior to 1916) At least one of the following:

Engl 380: American Literature to 1855

Engl 381: American Literature 1855-1916*

Engl 382: Modern American Literature

*Only if ethnic course below focuses on literature prior to 1916.

At least one of the following:

Engl 311: Asian/Pacific American Literatures

Engl 314: Topics in Asian/Pacific American Literature

Engl 321: African American Literature

Engl 322: Topics in African American Literature

Engl 341: Native American Literature

Engl 345: Chicano/Chicana Literature

Engl 346: Vanguard Poetics in Chicano/Latino Writers


Four Course Upper-Division Concentration

This four-course upper-division concentration must make up a coherent area of study, fall into one of the two categories listed below and include as a capstone an appropriate senior seminar, senior project (the latter possible with an acceptable proposal and a faculty member available to direct), or approved internship (in area 2). All courses must be approved by an advisor and may include one non-departmental or lower-division course if appropriate. Note that the Technical and Professional Writing certificate may be earned under the "Writing and Rhetoric" area of concentration. Consult "Guidelines for Concentrations" for suggested course combinations and alternative capstones.
