The undergraduate teacher preparation program culminates in a Bachelor of Arts in Education degree as well as a Washington State Residency Teacher Certificate with Elementary (K-8) Endorsement.
Students who have completed an associate's degree from a community college or who have completed sixty (60) semester credit hours of study may apply.
Applicants must also complete the program prerequisites and pass the WEST-B Test before beginning the program. Experience with children is also required for admission.
The BA in Education program begins once a year in the summer semester. Classes begin in June. We offer the program at two (2) locations: WSU Vancouver and Lower Columbia College in Longview. A maximum of thirty-five (35) students are admitted every year at each location.
Full-time students can complete the program in six consecutive semesters (four academic semesters and two summer semesters). Part-time enrollment is an option.

Admission Requirements
Students must be admitted to both WSU and the BA in Education Program before beginning classes. A transferred GPA of 2.5 is required. Please contact the WSU Vancouver Office of Admissions at (360) 546-9779 or admissions@vancouver.wsu.edu for application deadlines and the university application. Download the Application Portfolio for the BA in Education Program from this web page or obtain one from Julie Miller at 360/546-673 or millerj@vancouver.wsu.edu.
WEST-B (Washington Educator Skills Test - Basic): www.west.nesinc.com. A passing score on all three sections of the WEST-B is a prerequisite requirement for admission to all teacher preparation programs in the state of Washington. The three subtest topics are mathematics, reading, and writing. Paper copies of the test registration bulletin are available at each campus. An online study guide is provided at the WEST-B web site. Register online for the test.
Praxis II (WEST-E) Licensure Testing: www.ets.org/praxis/prxwa.html. A passing score is required on the Praxis II (WEST-E) test in the endorsement content area for "all candidates seeking their initial Washington teacher certification" and for "teachers from other states applying for their Washington residency teaching certificate". Note: this is not a prerequisite for admission, but students must pass the test before they begin student teaching in the second year of the BA in Education program.

Program Prerequisites
The following competencies are required by the State of Washington for elementary certification. The Education Department requires students to meet these competencies before they can begin the program. Prerequisites are often lower-division college courses (freshman or sophomore level). Courses completed as Advanced Placement in high school may count towards prerequisites if students have received college credit noted on their college transcript.
The following table offers information about courses offered locally that fulfill these prerequisites. Students must show proof that preprequisites have been met before BA in Education classes begin. (Click here to download prerequisite details in MS Word format.)
- Prerequisite classes must be completed prior to the start of the program (mid-June).
- Prerequisite classes cannot be taken as Pass/Fail.
- Students must earn a "C" (2.0) or beetter in all prerequisite classes.
