Justice in Education, Educating for Justice

With Keynote Address by
Dr. Manning Marable

The Center for Social and Environmental Justice (CSEJ) at WSU Vancouver will hold its second annual spring conference on April 23, 2006.  CSEJ active faculty, staff and students have identified the topic of Justice in Education, Educating for Justice as the theme of this years conference. The conference will explore two related questions? How can we advance equal access to high quality education for all? And what are the responsibilities, opportunities and strategies for educational institutions, educators and students to promote a more just society? For both questions we will consider teaching research and service activities within formal educational environments and in the broader community. A crosscutting theme will be debates (within and outside of academia) on the legitimacy of social transformation through education.

We are very fortunate to have Dr. Manning Marable, Professor of History, Public Affairs and Political Science and Director of the Institute for Research in African-American Studies at Columbia University, as our keynote speaker.  The author and/or editor of some 20 books and 200 scholarly articles, Dr. Marable is one of the best known scholars in the country on issues of equity and justice. He is also an activist and among the best known public intellectuals in the country. He is well qualified to speak to both of our themes, creating an equitable and just education system and exploring the role of educators, students and academic institutions in promoting social justice.  More information about Dr. Marable can be found on his website
http://www.manningmarable.net/biography/biography.html

Panels, round tables and workshops exploring specific aspects of the conference themes will take place throughout the day.  Topics will include equal access to higher education, increasing racial diversity in academia, scientific research in the face of political pressure, student activism in high school and college, healthy foods in the public schools, and the social justice implications of testing of K-12 students.
