What is an Internship?
An internship is a self-initiated, supervised work experience with appropriate private organizations, businesses, or government agencies that increases interaction with professionals in related fields.
What is the purpose of an internship?
To enhance students’ professional preparation through direct involvement in their chosen field.
To provide a learning environment where students apply knowledge and skills acquired in the classroom setting
To realistically prepare students to enter professional positions.
Examples of past internship sites include:
- Washington State Legislature in Olympia, Washington
- YWCA of Clark County
- CASA (Court Appointed Special Assistant)
- Building Industry Association of Clark County
- Children and Family Services Division
- Clark County Commissioners Office
- Department of Corrections
- Clark County Juvenile Court Services
- U.S. Probation Office
- Multnomah County Department of Community Justice
- Children’s Home Society of Washington
How do you get an internship?
1.Before the beginning of the semester, check with your faculty advisor to assure that internship credits are appropriate to your program of study. Determine how many credit hours of internship are appropriate for your program. Remember: 50 hours of fieldwork must be completed for each hour of credit for which you are registered.
2.Submit a one-page typed statement to a faculty member in your department or to the internship coordinator explaining why you are interested in an internship and how it relates to your academic and/or professional development.
- Begin contacting potential placement sites.
- Secure a site.
- Complete the Criminal Background Check form and submit it to the internship coordinator. Once everything is cleared, the internship coordinator will give you the Schedule Line Number (SLN) to register for the course.
3.At the beginning of the semester:
- Return to the internship coordinator, no later than the first week of the semester, the completed and signed forms: a) Learning Agreement Form b) Partnership Agreement Form and c) Student Release of Liability.
- Students who fail to submit their paperwork or contact the internship coordinator by the 10 th day of classes will be administratively dropped from the course.
