MgtOp 301 Principles of Management and Organization
Course Overview
This course is designed as an introduction to management. The
purpose is to introduce students to concepts and information about the structure
and functioning of complex organizations. A secondary purpose is to help students
think about managing and being managed in organizations.
3 credits.
Course Objectives
When you successfully complete this course, you will
have developed and/or enhanced various skills. More specifically, you will be
able to:
- Identify basic concepts and terminology within the field of management.
- Work in a student team and assess the functioning of a workplace team through
an interview.
- Address numerous factors related to individual behavior within
an organization (e.g., job satisfaction, employee motivation, personality, organizational
design, management style, etc.).
- Assess internal and external forces and their
influence on management and organizational effectiveness (e.g., legislation,
economic factors, technology, competition, organizational culture, employee characteristics,
global and diversity issues, ethics, social responsibility, etc.).
- Be aware of various subfields in the study of organizations that will be developed further
in more advanced courses in areas such as Human Resource Management and Organizational
Behavior.
