Portfolio Theory and Management
Course Overview
This course focuses on investments and financial markets.
The prerequisites for this course will have prepared the student with an understanding
of the theoretical foundations of the investment topics to be discussed. These
same topics will be considered in this course from a more applied perspective.
Lectures will cover the following topics: investment policy statements, asset
allocation, fixed-income portfolio management, equity portfolio management,
risk measurement and management, and performance measurement and attribution. Ethical
issues that confront investment managers will also be discussed in this course.

Course Objectives
It is expected that at the conclusion of the course, students
will be able to:
- Identify and describe the issues critical to the preparation of investment
policy statements for both individual and institutional investors. Prepare
an investment policy statement.
- Identify and describe active and passive fixed-income investment portfolio
strategies. Compare and contrast the different strategies.
- Identify and describe active and passive equity investment portfolio strategies.
Compare and contrast the different strategies.
- Identify and describe risk management strategies. Prepare hedging plans using stock index futures and interest rate futures.
- Evaluate portfolio performance. Prepare a portfolio attribution assessment.
- Identify and discuss the important ethical issues confronting investment advisors and money managers.
- Apply the theories of financial management, investment analysis and portfolio analysis to developing decisions. Recommend and justify decisions, including decisions arising from ambiguous
or unfamiliar information.
