Summer Elementary Students Get "A Time to Shine" at WSU Vancouver

The program, in its seventh year and directed by WSU Vancouver associate professor Susan Finley, paired education faculty and 34 graduate students with 300 elementary students at Silver Star Elementary School in the Evergreen district. About 15 certified teachers who have graduated from the program returned to teach in the summer program.
In addition to bridge building, dance, art and writing, this year's program features a few new elements: environmental video public service announcements produced by the students, and a performance by the new AHAS Children's Choir, directed by volunteer Anson Service, WSU Vancouver psychology graduate in 2006, now working on his Ph.D. from Argosy University.
The AHAS Children's Choir has already performed at a local book store, and features about 35 students, ages 4 to 12, singing music such as "We are the Champions," "Obla Di, Obla Da," and "In the Jungle (The Lion Sleeps Tonight)."
"The kids love it," said Service, "because I don't do boring songs."
