Southwest Washington MESA Hosts Middle School Math and Science Day

CONTACT:

Vancouver, Wash. - Southwest Washington Math, Engineering and Science Achievement will hold its second annual Math and Science Day, 9:30 a.m.-1:30 p.m. Oct. 19 at Washington State University Vancouver.

Math and Science Day promotes math and science literacy, and career options to middle school students with innovative, interactive and engaging hands-on science exhibits, demonstrations and lab activities. MESA connects math, engineering and science to everyday life, helping students envision themselves in these careers.

MESA primarily serves underrepresented minority students and their families: African American, Native American, Latino and female, by closing the achievement gap and offering support systems for entering college. SW Washington MESA currently runs programs in six area middle schools and one high school in the Evergreen, Vancouver and Washougal school districts.

At the 2006 Math and Science Day, one student said, "I like the fact that so many things were ‘hands-on'."

This year 150 students from seven schools, professors from WSU Vancouver, instructors from Clark College and area industry partners, including Hewlett-Packard, will be among the participants.

WSU Vancouver is located at 14204 N.E. Salmon Creek Ave., east of the 134th Street exit from either I-5 or I-205, or on C-Tran Bus route 19 from the Salmon Creek Park and Ride. WSU Vancouver offers 14 Bachelor's degrees, nine Master's degrees, one Doctorate degree and more than 35 fields of study. Visit us on the Web at http://www.vancouver.wsu.edu.
