Digital Artists-in-Residence Teach, Perform at WSU Vancouver

The Digital Technology and Culture Program at Washington State University Vancouver announces the 2008 Artists in Residency Program. Sensor-based game interfaces for bicycles, GPS narrative walks in downtown Vancouver, and sound/video works that use cars as the performance space are some of the projects generated out of this year’s theme, “Sensing Bodies: Physical Computing for Interactivity and Innovation.” The five artists invited to WSU Vancouver for the residency will teach “Interactive Art,” a course educating DTC students in interactive design. Artists will also provide learning opportunities to the Vancouver-Portland community through workshops, exhibits, and performances. Artists invited to the 2008 Digital Technology and Culture Artists in Residency Program include Steve Gibson, Justin Love, Will Luers, Julie Andreyev and Simon Lysander Overstall.

Two young up and coming artists are displaying their artwork in the Engineering Life Sciences Building at Washington State University Vancouver from Aug. 11 - Sept. 18. In the first floor gallery are the paintings of Brooke Keitel; the duct tape artwork of Reid Trevarthen is in the second floor gallery.

The art of Andrew Morrison will be on display Aug. 11 - Sept. 18 at Washington State University Vancouver Administration Building gallery. Andrew Morrison creates art work drawing from a number of sources for inspiration. His work is influenced by his Native American culture and heritage, as well as by hip-hop and street art.
Police Hold Training Exercise at WSU Vancouver, Evening of Aug. 6

Washington State University Vancouver and local police agencies including SW Washington SWAT are holding a training exercise on the WSU Vancouver campus, in the evening Aug. 6. The exercise involves uniformed police, fire, EMS and SWAT officers dealing with a SIMULATED police emergency on campus.

The work of Amitava Chowdhury, who received his Ph.D. in History from Washington State University Vancouver in May 2008, has recently contributed to the naming of a World Heritage Site by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization. An archaeological project Chowdhury directed was on the site of the recently declared UNESCO World Heritage Site, Le Morne Cultural Landscape, a rugged mountain jutting into the Indian Ocean in the southwest of the island of Mauritius.
Freshmen Required to Read, Study "Three Cups of Tea" at WSU Vancouver

This year’s required freshman reading project at Washington State University Vancouver is the best seller “Three Cups of Tea: One Man’s Mission to Promote Peace...One School at a Time,” by Greg Mortenson and Portland’s David Oliver Relin. Each year, a book is chosen at WSU Vancouver to go with the general education theme, which is currently “Global change in a local context.” This year’s freshmen have already received their complementary copies of the book.

Fall Chancellor's Seminar Series Offers Discount for Early Registration

Washington State University Vancouver presents the Chancellor’s Seminar Series, campus lunchtime presentations Fridays, Sept. 12, Oct. 10 and Nov. 14, in the Firstenburg Student Commons. Ticket price for each seminar is $30 per person, including lunch and parking, or $80 for all three seminars with registration by Sept. 5.
