The professional performance group Step Afrika! brings their act to Washington State University Vancouver at 6 p.m. April 16 in the Firstenburg Student Commons.

Students Offer Perspectives on Cars in "Visions of the Road"

Students at Washington State University Vancouver will give a presentation of readings and images about the road and automobiles in American society. “Visions of the Road” takes place 4 to 6 p.m. April 15 in the Firstenburg Student Commons. Donations of canned food will be accepted for local food banks, and refreshments will be served. The event is the last of the “Literacies for a Changing World” series at WSU Vancouver.

Join author Katie Alvord at the Washington State University Vancouver campus 5:30 - 7 p.m., Feb. 21 in the Administration Building, room 110. This event is free and open to the public.
More than a century of American automobility has created a mobile nation, but downsides like pollution and traffic jams have led many to suggest a solution by driving less as well as differently. Looking at the past, the problems, and the potential, Alvord will address this question by highlighting key moments in automotive history. She will describe some of the drawbacks of relying so heavily on cars and asphalt by detailing how changes in travel can generate a range of benefits from slowing climate change to saving money.

UPDATE: Elyse Umemoto, Miss Washington 2007, will serve as mistress of ceremonies, and participate in the media availability time. Umemoto, 23, of Wapato, Wash., is a member of the Yakama Tribe, a senior at Pacific Lutheran University, and promotes political involvement, particularly on issues effecting women and ethnic diversity. As the most wide open presidential primary in fifty years makes its way to Washington, students at Washington State University Vancouver will welcome Secretary of State Sam Reed and political parties to Primary Voices, a mock election and town hall. The bi-partisan campus event is slated for Feb. 4, 3:30 to 5 p.m. in the Administration Building, room 110.

Photojournalist Highlights "Focus The Nation" Global Warming Teach-in

Professors teaching each other’s classes, a brown bag discussion on global warming science policy, and a guest presentation by an award-winning photojournalist mark Washington State University Vancouver’s activities as a participant in the Focus The Nation national Teach-in. Focus The Nation is an unprecedented educational initiative on global warming solutions for America occurring at more than 1,500 campuses, faith and civic organizations and in all 50 states on Jan. 31.
The community is invited to hear Gary Braasch, noted photojournalist, discuss his newest book, “Earth Under Fire: How Global Warming is Changing the World,” which documents through essays and photographs the rapid climate change around the world.
