Electronic Literature Organization Holds Conference, Media Arts Shows May 29 - June 1

"Visionary Landscapes:  The Electronic Literature Organization 2008 Conference,” will be held May 29 - June 1 at the downtown Hilton Vancouver Washington, at Clark College, at WSU Vancouver (bus transportation provided), and at the downtown North Bank Artists Gallery, 1005 Main St. More than 120 digital media artists and critics from around the world will participate in the event.

WSU Regents Approve Capital, Operating Budget Requests

The Board of Regents of Washington State University approved the university’s capital and operating budget requests, which will be considered by the State Legislature in the 2009 session, at the board’s regular meeting Friday in Pullman. Leading the list of capital requests are $38.6 million for construction of the Applied Technology Classroom Building at WSU Vancouver, $7.4 million in design funding for a veterinary medical research building in Pullman, $15.75 million for a Pullman wastewater reclamation project and $16.1 million to turn the Bookie building in Pullman into classroom space. The Bookie will vacate its current building and move to the renovated Compton Union Building, which will open this fall.

Local Painter Leslie Cote Displays Work in Library

The newest art display in the Washington State University Vancouver library gallery is a group of oil paintings by Leslie Cote. Cote is a local artist who has shown in the Aurora Gallery, the Interstate Firehouse Cultural Center, and the YWCA.  In her current body of work she explores her ancestral heritage with images of people in Africa. The show runs until July 11.

"No Child Left Inside" Receives State Parks Grant for Youth Outdoor Education

The Washington State Parks and Recreation Commission announces the first awarding of grants to 25 organizations and agencies around Washington as part of the No Child Left Inside program, created to get kids connected with nature…
This will be accomplished through a partnership with Susan Finley, an education professor at Washington State University Vancouver, where she heads the master’s in teaching program and oversees the At Home At School Program.

Mother, Son Graduating Together as Mechanical Engineers

When the students and faculty of Washington State University Vancouver gather for commencement this year on May 10 at 1 p.m., many proud parents will fill The Amphitheater at Clark County to watch their children graduate.

However, on this day before Mother’s Day, one mother will be cheering her son from the students’ seating, and he will cheer her as well. Tami Galland, 43, and her son Loy J. Dockery, III, 21, are both receiving their bachelor of science in mechanical engineering degree.

2008 WSU Vancouver Outstanding Grad, Faculty Honored

May 10 is graduation day for 711 students of Washington State University Vancouver. Each year, one undergraduate student as well as two faculty members receive a special mention during the ceremony.

The Chancellor’s Award for Student Achievement will go to David Neuhauser, 44. Despite great personal difficulty in recent years, Neuhauser is receiving his Bachelor of Arts in human development, with a 3.87 GPA. “The human development faculty and staff supported me through so much, even when they didn’t know it,” he said. “The professors were always so approachable – they were like friends as well as teachers.”

Gov. Chris Gregoire to Speak at WSU Vancouver Commencement Ceremony May 10

Washington State University Vancouver will honor the 711 members of the class of 2008 at the annual commencement ceremony, May 10 at 1 p.m. at The Amphitheater at Clark County. This nineteenth class from WSU Vancouver includes 585 undergraduates and 126 graduate students. The guest speaker will be Washington State Gov. Chris Gregoire.
