WSU Auvil Fellow Awards Given to 31 Undergraduates for Fall 2008

[Note: Amy Huseby is the only WSU Vancouver student to receive this fellowship.] PULLMAN, Wash.-Undergraduates engaged in mentored research, scholarship, and creativity have received a record number of awards from the Auvil Fellows program, according to an announcement by the Office of Undergraduate Research at Washington State University. Thirty-one students from majors across the university received word Wednesday, Oct. 1, that they would each receive $1,000 to further their research work. They were selected from a competitive pool of more than 50 that represented most of the colleges at the university.

Authors of New Book will Brief Congress on Complex Nature of Reading

Learning to read means mastering letters and sounds-and a whole lot more.  That’s the premise of a new book, “What Research REALLY Says about Teaching and Learning to Read,” published by the National Council of Teachers of English (NCTE). The “lot more” part includes such things as understanding the relationship of one word to the next, how texts are organized, and the willingness of readers to use their background knowledge to monitor and evaluate what they’ve read.  This expanded view of reading is so important to national education policy that the book’s authors have been invited to share their findings with members of Congress.

Show Apple Cup Spirit With "You've Been COUGed" Signs

On Nov. 22, the Washington State University Cougars will participate in the 101st annual Apple Cup football game against the University of Washington Huskies in Pullman at Martin Stadium. Local Cougar supporters can show their spirit by “COUGing” fellow fans or UW Husky fans, by purchasing a “You’ve been COUGed” sign in to be displayed in yards the week of the Apple Cup.

WSU Vancouver Offers Youth Robotics, Video Production Programs

The Washington State University Vancouver and WSU Extension Center for Youth Workforce Preparation is now accepting applications for the Fall 4-H Teen-Works program. 

Middle school and high school students may select either First Tech Challenge Robotics or Digital Video Production.  Both Tracks will meet weekly. The robotics track will run from late September 2008 to March 2009.  The Video Production Track will run mid-October 2008 to April 2009.

Washington's Top Students To Be Offered Assured Acceptance to WSU

As Washington State University continues to build its academic reputation among leading land-grant universities, its admissions office is making a new offer to high-ranking students. Effective immediately, applicants from the state of Washington to the Pullman, Tri-Cities and Vancouver campuses who rank in the top ten percent of their class or who have earned at least a 3.5 GPA at the time of their application will be granted assured admission.

WSU Vancouver Fall Honors Lectures, including "Autism the Musical," Explore Neurodiversity

The Washington State University Vancouver University Scholars program offers a series of lectures by prominent scholars with national reputations. University Scholars students may attend the series for credit and participate in special discussions led by the guest lecturers. The lecture series is free and open to the public. This fall’s series topic is “Neurodiversity: Changing Minds, Changing World.” All lectures begin at 5:15 p.m. in the Administration Building, room 110.
