Resources & Services for Adjuncts
The Library has a liaison program especially for adjunct professors at WSU Vancouver. We encourage adjuncts to contact the Adjunct Liaison Librarian for advice and assistance in using the Library's services.
The Library has more than 9,000 print and electronic magazine and journal titles, a core reference collection, and a growing book and media collection of more than 21,000 items. What follows is a description of some of the programs and services that the library offers to WSU Vancouver faculty.
Griffin
The Library Catalog for WSU is called Griffin and, through it, you can see what materials are owned by all of the WSU Libraries. If a book or video is at another WSU campus, it can be sent here for you.
Summit
The Library is part of a consortia of college and university libraries that share materials. If the item you are searching for is not in Griffin, search Summit.
Databases
The Library provides access electronically to over 100 indexes and databases covering a wide range of subject areas. Most indexes are accessible from your office computer through our website and many are accessible from off campus.
Interlibrary Loan / ILLiad
Materials not accessible through the WSU library system are usually obtainable from other libraries through our interlibrary loan service. This service is currently free of charge, except for photocopy charges (paid through your departmental budget). The Library uses an online request system called ILLiad to streamline this process. Books take varying times to arrive based on where they come from. Articles take only 24 – 48 hours to arrive.
Library Instruction
Librarians are available to meet with individual classes to provide instruction on using library resources. If This is usually done as a guest lecture during the normal class period. Feel free to contact us if you would like a librarian to visit your class. Because librarians meet with many classes, contact us as early in the semester as possible.
Course Reserves
The library will put on reserve any item that follows the reserve guidelines and encourages faculty to make articles and other course notes available via electronic reserves. The WSU Guidelines suggests allowing two weeks for processing of reserves and the Vancouver Library requires at least 48 hours for processing. Copyright on reserve items can be complicated. You are encouraged to contact the Library as soon as you know you will be using reserves so that we can go over the guidelines and copyright with you.
Circulation Policies
Faculty members are given semester-long loan privileges for materials from the WSU library system; however, materials are subject to recall if another patron requests them. Materials borrowed from Summit libraries or items borrowed through Interlibrary Loan will have much shorter borrowing times. All WSU library system materials can be renewed online or from the WSU Vancouver library. Journals do not circulate; however, a copy card for each department is available at the Circulation desk for in-library photocopying.
Cooperative Collection Building
While the acquisitions budget is not formulated by program sub-budget, every effort is made to build a collection that equitably supports the varying needs of the students, faculty, and staff. It is very useful and strongly encouraged that faculty articulate their collection needs to the librarians. While it is not always possible to purchase everything that is requested, any and all requests are given serious consideration.
Reference Services
The Library provides personalized and responsive reference service to students, staff and faculty. We are available in person at the Reference desk, via phone (360-546-9686), via email (library@vancouver.wsu.edu) or via IM (information below). We also meet on an individual basis with students, staff and faculty who want more time to discuss their research projects.
Free Workshops & Technology Instruction
Throughout fall and spring semesters, we offer a variety of workshops on library, Internet and technology topics. These workshops are free to WSU Vancouver faculty, staff and students. In addition, we can arrange for instructors to meet with individual classes to help students learn the technology they need in order to complete their class projects.
Questions & Assistance
If you have any questions about Library resources and/or services, please let us know. Feel free to contact your liaison or anyone at our Reference desk.
