Advising

The Academic Coordinator for the Department of Human Development works to help assure on-time graduation for the students with majors in the department.  She coordinates the students' entry into the Human Development program, assigns them an appropriate faculty advisor, and checks with the students and advisors periodically to assure they are on track. To make a Department of Human Development advising appointment, please contact the department support staff.

You can read the full explanation of the undergraduate advising in the Washington State University Vancouver Course Catalog, including a complete list of the responsibilities of the Academic Coordinator, the Faculty Advisor, and you, the student. However, we offer this brief summary of what you should expect as a Human Development major to give you an overview.

General advising information for all students is available at the Registration Advising site.

Academic Coordinator

Transfer students will meet with the Academic Coordinator for the department of your major to get you started as you enter Washington State University Vancouver, and to assure you have met the graduation requirements as you prepare to leave Washington State University Vancouver. Freshmen will begin advising through the Student Resource Center.

The Academic Coordinator will:

  • Discuss with you general education, writing portfolio, senior capstone and other degree requirements
  • Prepare for you a degree checksheet and advising file
  • Assist you in choosing classes for your first semester
  • Help you learn how to register using myWSU
  • Assist with the many other tasks associated with getting started
  • Assign you a faculty advisor
  • Keep your advising file updated as you move through your degree program at Washington State University Vancouver
  • Help you apply for graduation
  • Prepare your preliminary graduation to-do list and assist you in understanding its details

Faculty Advisor

Before you register for classes each semester, you will meet with your assigned faculty advisor to ensure that the classes for which you plan to register are appropriate for your educational goals.

Your Faculty Advisor will:

  • Discuss your degree and career options with you
  • Discuss class options with you and help you develop an appropriate schedule
  • Discuss internship opportunities with you
  • Refer you to the appropriate resources for financial aid, counseling, or special accommodation services
  • Provide graduate school information

As a student, however, the ultimate responsibility is yours. To be successful, you will need to do some planning before you meet with your Faculty Advisor each semester, and come to the meeting prepared to discuss the options available to you.

Refer to the Washington State University Vancouver Course Catalog and Human Development Checksheet for a checklist to help assure your success.
