  • Background
    Professor Umesh’s primary research and teaching focus is in the area of marketing, with a focus on internet marketing, start up companies and entrepreneurship.  He has published articles in such academic journals as the Journal of Marketing Research, Journal of Marketing, Marketing Letters, Journal of the Academy of Marketing Science, Psychology and Marketing, Decision Sciences, Sociological Methods & Research, Journal of Business Research, Psychometrika, and the Journal of Forecasting.  He has presented papers at a number of national and international conferences sponsored by American Marketing Association, Association for Consumer Research, Institute for Operations Research and Management Sciences, and the The Academy of Marketing Science. He reviews papers for the Journal of the Academy of Marketing Science, the Journal of Marketing Research, the Journal of Business Venturing as well as for many other journals and national conferences. 

    Dr. Umesh developed and currently runs the "Business/Student Partnership" that helps student groups get practical business experience using class projects.  In 1997, he served on a national blue ribbon panel to judge the best Ph.D. dissertation in marketing from U.S., Canadian and foreign universities. He has served as a reviewer for the AMA Doctoral Dissertation Award, and the George Day Doctoral Dissertation Awards in Strategic Marketing for Ph.D. graduates who submit to these competitions from various Universities around the world.  The professor has taught a wide variety of courses and is the recipient of five teaching awards for superior teaching, including being voted Outstanding Professor of the Year on three separate occasions by marketing students.

    Professor Umesh has practical experience with a wide variety of entrepreneurial and start-up companies. These activities have focussed on assessing the market for new products and services and determining the viability and ultimate market success of a product.  Other areas have included the strategy and planning required to promote and market technological products in fast growth markets.  He has given talks and courses to the public on Ecommerce and Marketing on the Web.
