 Correspondence Analysis
Assignment #8

Analysis: Correspondence Analysis

Problem: How does the community structure of three marine protected areas (MPAs) change over time after closure? Seven species of reef fish were monitored 4-6 times per year between 1999 and 2008. The MPAs were closed to collection of aquarium fish at the beginning of 2000 but open to other fishing activties. For more information about the study design and sites see  Tissot et al 2004

The following species were examined:

Aquarium fish:

CHMU: Chaetodon multicinctus

CTST: Ctenochaetus strigosus

ZEFL: Zebrasoma flavescens

Non-Aquarium fish:

ACNF: Acanthurus nigrofuscus

CHVA: Chromis vanderbilti

CHAG: Chromis agilis

THDU: Thallosoma duperrey

The following MPA sites were examined:

ABay: Anaehoomalu Bay

Hono: Honokohau

Milo: Milolii (Omokaa)

Assignment:

Analyze the problem using Correspondence Analysis (not detrended). Describe and contrast the results for the first two axes for both species and samples and provide a biological interpretation of the results.

How is the community structure of MPAs changing over time? Are all MPAs changing in the same way?  What potential interactions among species are occurring?

Use grouping factors (year and site) to help interpret the results. Use ANOVA or other statistical tests, if appropriate, to test any hypotheses about patterns you may discover.
