Questions for your Journal

 

Lecture #1:

 

  1. What did you learn today that was new? What had you heard before?

  2. How does the frontier ethic apply to you? Do you have typical American values towards the environment?

  3. Which approach, social ecology, ecofeminism or deep ecology resonates the most with you and why?

  4. Jot down a few ideas on the "Mote in God's Eye" dilemma.

Lecture #5:

  1. Does IE sounds like a useful tool to you? Have you thought or been aware of these four perspectives before?

  2. Can you think of something you have perceived differently since hearing about IE?

  3. What do you think about spiral dynamics? Have you been in interactions with others where you may have seen these dynamics in action?

  4. Keep track of instances in your journal where you have a different perception or develop a new understanding, if any, during this course using an IE approach.

Earth Day: Questions for the ethics lecture

  1. Where did your get values regarding your relationship to the Earth come from? Family? Religion? Personal Experience?

  2. Is science value-free? Do the results of a scientific study have environmental value themselves?

  3. What is the difference between advocating for science and advocating for policy? Think of a specific situation to help answer the question.

  4. Do you feel comfortable as a scientist advocating for policy? Please explain why or why not.
