RESEARCH

Current Research

I am currently conducting qualitative research on the Hutterites to determine parenting and family relationship patterns. This research involves quality and quantity time in the field living with participants. I am also studying never married Hutterite women.

I have also begun a qualitative investigation of adolescence in three cultures: Hutterites, Brazil, and Aka foragers and Ngandu farmers from Central Africa with two colleagues. We are beginning by assessing a day in the life of adolescents in each of these groups and are seeking funding for future research.

My primary research interests center on issues relating to parenting, specifically fathers.  Example of this includes the project in which grandparents functioning as primary parents are being assessed.  Recent research  focused on the effects of kidney disease on the family system, particularly the ability to parent while ill. Similar research has also been conducted on individuals with carcinoid disease.
