Skill Set Homework Assignments [Make sure to read this entire document. You are responsible for all information contained here] |
Below you will find the URLS for the MIS250 self tutorials for the Skills Assignments. You will be required to turn in the homework assignments on the dates indicated on the class schedule. |
As indicated in the syllabus, assignments must be submitted in the form and means specified. If a student deviates from the required format or means for submission without prior permission, the assignment will be graded with the associated penalties below. Note: if you are caught using other people’s work at any point in these exercises or any part of the course, you will be subject to discipline at the University level to the fullest extent possible. |
If you have any questions for him during this time period, you can also get email support at the email address for the TA rosemis350@yahoo.com.
But do remember that you are expected to learn these tutorials on your own and should only ask him for help when you have made a good faith attempt to learn on your own. Learning is really done best when you make mistakes and overcome them through trial and error. As such, answers will not be given indiscriminately but will be given with an attempt to steer you in the right direction, but not at the expense of your learning on your own. |

3. Missing any important steps (-15% per step) |
Please make your own files using unique data points in each of the assignments so as to demonstrate that the work was your own. You should include information that is specific to yourself. Also use current dates where dates are given in the tutorials (i.e., if a date given is 1999, put in something equivalent from this month). (Note: where the tutorials give dates either for entry or for queries, you should use a current sensible date to demonstrate the functionality. So if you query, use dates that actually exist in your data) |
These three assignments must be turned in within the first 10 minutes of the assigned class period or you will be penalized (note: if you cannot make it to class, you may want to have a classmate turn in your assignment for you). These must be submitted in the lecture room or you will be penalized. You may not email these files or you will be penalized. |
And please note that the assignments will not be returned to you, so you should keep a copy of your files in case the diskette is unreadable. You should make backups of your work in any case. Some diskettes cannot be read. In those instances, your work will be |
considered not turned in. So you should check to make sure your disks are able to be read by a machine other than the one you are using to be sure that the disk is not corrupt. |
The Access, PowerPoint, AND Excel assignments are to be turned in on floppy diskette or CD Rom along with a printed copy of the associated work in the files. You should have approximately 2-4 pages of printouts total. Show what you feel are the 2-4 pages that best represent your work. These are not necessarily the pages the tutorial says to print. This is simply to allow us to see you completed the major steps of the tutorial. |

PowerPoint: (worth 2.5% of your final grade)-
For PowerPoint you may choose to do either of these two tutorials.
Choice 1 - http://www.vancouver.wsu.edu/vis/documentation/workshops/ppt_xp.htm

Unprofessional looking (-15%) Unprofessional language (-15% or possible disciplinary action if you are rude or threatening in any way) Missing any important steps (-15% per step). This includes any errors like “broken” pictures or broken links to Web pages |
The HTML assignment is to be posted on a Web server. You will need to get a Web account so you can post your files. You can do this by getting a WSU account or by using your own Internet Service Provider. If you use a service other than WSU, you will need to learn on your own how to transfer files to that account. A tutorial will only be provided for WSU accounts. The HTML assignment will be submitted in the form of a URL address where the finished Web pages can be seen on the Internet. |
You will email your name and your URL (Web page address that starts with ‘http://’) to the teaching assistant at rosemis350@yahoo.com.
Your HTML assignment will only |
be graded based on the files posted online. Make sure that you check to see how your work looks from a Web browser to make sure it is correct. Web pages will not be accepted on diskette. Any files not posted online will receive a zero grade. Any files not publicly accessible will receive a zero grade (i.e., don’t post on a site requiring a password for access). The URL must be emailed to the teaching assistant no later than 10 minutes after class starts on the day the assignment is due. After that, they will be considered late. See below for creating a Web account at WSU Vancouver. Be aware that these steps take days so you need to do this weeks before the Web assignment is due. |
Step 1: get an email & Web account (Unix account) |
Go to http://www.vancouver.wsu.edu/vit/webinstructions.html
Step 2- Click on “Information for Students”
and follow the directions.
Step 3- Make Webpages: |
The up to date tutorial for Dreamweaver for the HTML assignment that matches the version in the labs is now available. Go to |
http://www.vancouver.wsu.edu/vis/documentation/workshops/dreamweaver/dreamweaver1.html. It includes the link to the tutorial as well as links to thegraphics files you will need. Note that you may use any Web page authoring tool to do this assignment as long as the end product follows the spirit of this tutorial. Any tool including MSWord, Frontpage, or Netscape Composer is fine as long as you end up with a deliverable that is similar to that shown in the tutorial. What do I mean by “spirit of the tutorial?” You must have 2 linked pages with graphics on them. The pages must have links to disclaimer pages. http://www.wsu.edu/Disclaimer.html
The pages must link to an outside site such as the Oregon Zoo. That’s it.
Step 4 – Transfer your files to the Web: |
GO TO http://www.vancouver.wsu.edu/vis/vit/webinstructions.html AND CLICK ON “STUDENTS”
Step 5. Find your files on the Web: |
Now that your files are on the server, you probably want to know where to find them on the Web. Let's assume your account name is "genericstudent" and you have a file in your www directory called "webpage.html". To bring up that page in a browser, type the following in the browser's address bar: http://phoenix.vancouver.wsu.edu/~genericstudent/webpage.html
