ACADEMIC SERVICE AND ACTIVITIES
Investigator, Master’s in Professional Communications and Writing Feasibility Study (2005)Built coalitions of support with business and community groups, identified potential applicant pools, assessed employment possibilities for the graduates of proposed program, and developed cross departmental support. Curriculum Development, Upper-Division Writing Curriculum Redesign Project (2005)Developed syllabus for redesigned Introduction to Professional Writing course, emphasizing theory and practice of document design and standardization across multiple document types. Client-based projects in which students develop style guides informed by existing documentation and local and international standards. Professional Writing Teaching & Program Development Activities (2002—2005)Professional Writing Textbook Review Committee – Created library of business and technical writing textbooks, containing a one-to-two page data sheet evaluating each text in the areas of writing strategies, professional writing issues, and support materials. Assisted new professional writing teachers in matching text to pedagogy. Undergraduate Professional Writing Certificate – Developed plan for a 16 unit undergraduate Professional Writing Certificate, offering a track in “Technical Writing and Design” and a track in “Business Writing and Organizational Communication”. Assessed numbers and types of related courses across campus and balanced against needs of students, community partners, and departmental resources to ensure best use of current infrastructure. Professional Writing Workshops – Developed monthly professional writing pedagogical workshops for professional writing teachers. Facilitated sharing of assignments, teaching approaches, and resources development and exchange. Profcomm Business and Technical Writing Instructional Site (2002—2003)Curricular development and technical support, including redesign of web site and curricular materials, as part of the University of Arizona New Learning Environments and Instructional Technology Grant. Taught 3 semesters of Business Writing online using Profcomm site and TeamWave Workplace™ online collaboration environment. English Graduate Union (co-chair), University of Arizona (2001—2002)Coordinated projects to address English graduate student needs, including increased stipends, tuition waivers, teaching-load reduction, and health insurance. Met regularly with the English Department Head, Dean of College of Humanities, and Dean of Graduate Studies to discuss current concerns and acted as liaison between administrators and EGU officers. Drafted first EGU constitution. Dean’s Academic Advisory Council, University of Arizona (2001)Graduate student representative. Ensured graduate students concerns addressed by committee and communicated to the Dean. Coalition to Organize Graduate Students (co-chair), University of Arizona (2000—2001)Directed the activities of over 200+ graduate student members in the campaign to organize. Addressed Arizona Senate, Arizona Board of Regents, and University of Arizona community to build support for democratic hiring procedures, improved working conditions, fair grievance procedures, and better quality of life. |
