Conduct and Misconduct

Summer Courses in the Novel

A Word of Advice...

Whatever the fashions may be, never be induced by them to violate the strictest modesty. No woman can strip her arms to her shoulders and show her back and bosom without injuring her mind and losing some of her refinement..."

-- The Young Lady's Friendby a Lady (Boston,1836)

What are we going to believe about women?

These courses will look at women in literature and conduct/self help manuals throughout the late 18th, 19th and 20th centuries. Women are represented as wild, unruly, passionate creatures in literature, and as pious, submissive, domestic, and pure in many conduct books. But not always. Two successive courses this summer will look into how women are supposed to act -- and how they act in novels -- a very telling and influential place to look for female figures.
