- My wife Yana and I graduated from the University of North Florida, a
great public university in Jacksonville, Florida. At North Florida I

my PhD at Indiana University, Bloomington.
- My family comes from the village of Sonai on the island of Yonaguni
(southern Ryukyu Islands)
and
the mountain region of western North Carolina
(southern Appalachia); Yana's family hails from the
Russian Far East.

since lived in Memphis,
Tennessee; Fernandina Beach,
Florida; Bloomington, Indiana; and Vancouver, Washington.
