Dr. Ernst-Slavit is a past president ofWAESOL (Washington State English to Speakers of OtherLanguages). Her degrees include:
Ph.D.Bilingual/ESL, University of Florida
M.S. International Intercultural Education, Florida State University
B. S. Psychology, Pontificia Universidad Catolica del Peru
She is currently an Associate Professor inBilingual/ESL Education and the Coordinator of the Bilingual/ESLProgram at Washington State University Vancouver. She teachescourses in sociolinguistics, literacy, and bilingual, ESL, andforeign language education. She is the Director of theBilingual/ESL Teacher Advancement Program (BETAP),a Title VII funded program designed to address a critical shortage ofbilingual/ESL teachers in the Southwest Washington area.
Dr. Ernst-Slavit's research is theoreticallydriven and involves the application of detailed and systematicmethods derived from sociolinguistic and ethnographic perspectives.Her work can be organized around two main areas:
* Research on Literacyand Language in Classrooms
* Teacher Preparation for Multilingual/Multicultural Settings
