Institutional Productivity in 9 Major Journals From 1984-1999

This study looks at the journal productivity by institution from 1984 through April 1999.  The biographical information for each article was examined to identify the affiliation of the authors (Note that the institutional code represents only the affiliations listed in the published journal article.  No attempt was made to adjust the data for faculty who have changed institutions over time). The institutions represented were then coded, with 1 count given to each institution represented.  If multiple authors were from the same institution, the institution received only 1 count.  There was no penalty for coauthorship, so when an article was written by two faculty at different institutions, each institution received a count of 1 for that article.  Lastly, a variable was included to indicate the institutional affiliation of the lead author (this data was not analyzed).

Data was collected from any available issues of the following journals from January 1984 through April 1999.

Journal of Marketing
Journal of Marketing Research
Journal of Consumer Research
Journal of the Academy of Marketing Science
Marketing Science
Marketing Letters
Journal of Advertising
Journal of Advertising Research
Journal of Retailing

Some readers may express concern that the data does not include a specific journal, doesn't account for differences in faculty size, treats lead and coauthors equally, or doesn't do some enlightening breakdown (e.g., trends).  You are welcome to download the raw data and coding scheme and augment the analysis (I can also post your results or a link to your analysis).  Readers are welcome to use this data for internal purposes.  Other use of this data requires the permission of the author (cote@vancouver.wsu.edu) and citation of the source of the data.

These tables list institutions in increasing order of productivity (tables corrected for errors 1/12/00):

Institutional Productivity for all 9 Journals
Institutional Productivity for a subset of 5 journals (JM, JMR, JCR, JAMS, MSci)
Institutional Productivity for a subset of 3 journals (JM, JMR, JCR)
Productivity in JCR, JM, & JMR adjusted for department size

Those interested in research productivity for the full range of business disciplines may want to look at Business School Research Rankings posted by Alan Dennis. ASU's W. P. Carey School of Business has a ranking for Finance.

WARNING:  This data was collected and coded by a TA. It has only been superficially check for accuracy. There have been several reported problems with unrecorded JM articles, so interpret the data with caution.
