assignment two: creative web project - 35%
One-page outline due September 28;
Final submission date October 17.
In this project, you will construct your own non-commercial website,
using the skills you've acquired during the semester.
This is your chance to let your creativity out! Try exploring online storytelling,
personal narrative or blogging. Educate, inform, or entertain your audience.
Most importantly, this assignment gives you the chance to talk about anything
you want (err, anything legal, that is..). If you want to write poetry or
a science fiction story, go right ahead. If you want to educate your fellow
netizens on nuclear fuel-rod disposal, oriental mushroom-collecting, or
mashed-potato sculpture, that's ok, too.
Past successful projects have included creative and critical writing,
a dream journal, and an imaginary book. Go here
for examples.
Here are some general criteria to help you:
- Your site should be at least 6 web pages total (more is quite ok).
- The narrative/information presented should be substantive,
i.e. more than just a couple of lines on each page. (remember, though,
that too much information on one page will overwhelm your readers, unless
it's very carefully organized.)
- You should pay attention to the issues you have learned during the
semester, eg reader usability, navigation, and bandwidth. Make sure
your HTML/style sheets are readable, not filled with unnecessary code,
and conform to the recommended standards in Lemay.
- Your design and layout should be simple and uncluttered. it's not
necessary to be a super-hot web designer or an art major to create a
great-looking website; spend an hour reading Robin Williams' book for
hints on typography and layout, and check out your color choices with
friends or other students in the class.
- The HTML and creative content must be your own work. Plagiarism, just
as in other classes, will not be tolerated. If you use images from other
sources, make sure you obtain permission in advance, and include it
with your final project (an email is fine).
- check your site for spelling/punctuation/grammatical errors (this
is an English class; just because you're writing for the Web doesn't
mean sloppy language is excused).
