Annual Public Affairs Lecture Series - Afternoon Symposium
The two-part afternoon symposium is designed to bring an objective, thoughtful and diverse framing of the topic for this year’s Annual Public Affairs Lecture Series — Religion in Politics. The annual event is centered around an evening keynote speaker but the conversation starts earlier in the day. The academic perspective, followed by views from local community members, presented in the Afternoon Symposium encourages the audience to think critically about the topic as a whole.
12:00pm to 1:15pm - Symposium Keynote Speaker: D. Michael Lindsay
D. Michael Lindsay is a sociologist at Rice University who studies leadership, religion, and culture.
His most recent book, Faith in the Halls of Power: How Evangelicals Joined the American Elite, was named a “Best Book” of the year in 2007 by Publishers Weekly and has been nominated for the nonfiction Pulitzer Prize.
1:30pm to 2:45pm - Panel discussion on faith-based political action
Panel discussion led by community leaders from faith communities discuss faith-based political action. Panelists include:
- Stephanie Tama-Sweet, Executive Director, Oregon Center for Christian Values
- Andrea Cano, Executive Director, Oregon Farm Worker Ministries
- Jon Russell, Executive Director, Faith and Freedom Foundation
