“Smart Environments: Artificial Intelligence at Home and Beyond”

Presented by Dr. Diane Cook (WSU Pullman)

As world populations change, age, and grow, Washington State University scientists are designing smarter technologies to meet our evolving needs. In 35 years, nearly 23% of the U.S. population will be 65 or older, and many will suffer the physical and cognitive impairments of aging. Our homes could someday be “smart” enough to identify individual inhabitants, predict each person’s movements, and turn appliances off and on according to specific routines. They could also help keep our homes cleaner, safer, and more effectively supplied with food and medicine. Such Smart Environments could relieve the emotional and financial burdens on adult children caring for their aging parents by monitoring the parents’ vital signs and indicating whether they are performing their routine daily activities.
