Paintings by Kris Haas
Tuesday, August 21, 2007 to Thursday, October 04, 2007
Artist Kris Haas produced a new show especially for Washington State University Vancouver, on display through Oct. 4 in the Administration building.
Haas’ paintings reach a level of explosive color that is undeniably unique; they are a constant exploration of the human experience involved in the act of creation. Over the past twelve years Haas’ work has been recognized in international juried competitions. She has been involved in numerous group shows while at the same time meeting the demands for eight solo exhibits.
She says her work is about uncovering the self, an exploration of the self’s experiences in life and how a life is affected by all that is absorbed day to day. She also believes she is a wordless story teller and that art should not be allowed, or allow itself, to be defined by words.
Entry to campus exhibits is free. WSU Vancouver galleries are open from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday through Thursday and 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday.

Photographs by WSU Student Jian Tie Yang
Wednesday, September 05, 2007 to Friday, November 30, 2007
Jian Tie Yang’s photographs are on display in the Washington State University Vancouver Library now through the end of November.
Yang grew up in China and the photography series serves as a visual reflection of the memories he had as a child. He is a master of fine arts in photography student at WSU in Pullman.
Yang currently has two black and white displays located in the library. The first, “Left Behind,” utilizes objects found in derelict farmsteads and abandoned homes in the rural Palouse countryside. Some of these items were removed from their original context and placed into a separate, but nearby scene in order to create a new narrative.
The other display is titled, “The Trail of Time,” which pictures burning incense. Yang said that according to Chinese philosophy, life is like the burning incense, everything is transient and the smoke trail is not predictable.
Yang’s work is not only unique, but also conveys enough information to encourage the viewer’s own interpretation and personal feelings.
Entry to exhibits is free. Library hours are Monday - Thursday 8 a.m. - 10 p.m., Friday 8 a.m. - 6 p.m., and Saturday - Sunday 10 a.m. - 7.p.m.
Parking is available in metered spaces, weekdays in the Blue Lot for $3, and weekends in all colored lots.

Quilts by Ann Johnston
Friday, October 05, 2007 to Wednesday, November 28, 2007
Ann Johnston’s unique quilts are on display in the Washington State University Vancouver Administration building gallery now through Nov. 28.
Johnson has been making quilts and putting dye on fabric for over 25 years. Her years of experimentation have led to mountains of hand dyed fabric and quilts, thousands of miles of travel, numerous exhibitions and articles, four books, and not a few aches and pains. She earned degrees in literature and geography, married, had two sons, and taught school in several countries.
Johnson will present her “Line Vs. Shape” lecture to the public on the WSU Vancouver campus at 5:00 p.m. Oct. 17 in the Administration Building, room 236. This free lecture will use her quilts to illustrate the basic concepts of design and the tools used to achieve them. Her premise is that being aware of the characteristics of line and shape for example will enable the quilter to view how decisions affect the final design. A series of quilts called, “It’s a Balancing Act” gives viewers an idea of how she has explored line and shape while pursuing the mystery of how balance is achieved or lost. Guests interested in attending the lecture should RSVP to Lea Robertson at , 360/546-9600.

"High Tech Trash: Digital Devices, Hidden Toxics, and Human Health"
Wednesday, November 07, 2007
Elizabeth Grossman, author of “High Tech Trash: Digital Devices, Hidden Toxics, and Human Health” will be speaking at Washington State University Vancouver at 3 p.m., Nov. 7 in the Administration building room 110.
Grossman will be speaking about the problems generated by electronic waste and her current work on how plastics are changing our health and the world’s chemistry. Her research methods and process as a freelance writer, articulate the environmental issues posed by high tech manufacturing and disposal, and the effects of plastics on human development and behavior.
From the manufacturing process to their end in “closet landfills” at home or “recycling” with hammers and open fires in China, India, and American prisons, Grossman follows computers through their life cycle and finds surprises at every stage by taking a closer look at “the global and local movement and impacts of persistent and pervasive pollutants-synthetic chemicals that emerge from finished products as well as from industrial and waste sites and which are changing the world’s chemistry on both a cellular and landscape scale.”
Perhaps most interesting of all, Grossman also looks into potential solutions to these issues of through “green chemistry” and engineering with alternative materials.
For more on Grossman’s work, see http://www.hightechtrash.com and her current research on plastics and human development at http://www.salon.com/news/feature/2007/08/02/bisphenol/index_np.html

"Ending Slavery: How We Free Today's Slaves"
Tuesday, November 13, 2007
Kevin Bales, professor of sociology at Roehampton University in London and president of Free the Slaves, will be discussing his new book “Ending Slavery: How We Free Today’s Slaves” at noon, Nov. 13 at Washington State University Vancouver in the Administration building, room 110. The event will begin with a 30 minute film, “Dreams Die Hard,” which profiles several people trapped in slavery across the United States.
President of the U.S. sister organization of Anti-Slavery International (the world’s oldest human rights organization), Bales estimates that there are 27 million people in slavery today: people held against their will, forced to work and paid nothing. This means that there are more people in slavery today than at any other time in human history. Since slavery feeds directly into the global economy, it touches many products that come into modern homes and investments.

Work by Donald J. Stewart
Monday, December 03, 2007 to Friday, January 25, 2008
A collection of art work created by the late Donald J. Stewart, noted community leader and philanthropist, will be on display in Washington State University Vancouver Administration Building gallery from Dec. 3 - Jan. 25. Entry to this campus exhibit is free.
There will be a gallery reception nearing the end of the exhibit from 3 -7 p.m., Jan. 15 in the Administration Building gallery.
Stewart was born on July 31, 1895, in the Palouse area of eastern Washington. He showed an active interest in art during his youth and planned a career as an artist, but his father, county superintendent in Spokane, encouraged him to choose a less risky career path. Stewart retired in 1967 after 45 flourishing years as an architect. In retirement, his interest again turned to art and he began painting scenes at Heathergate Garden, the grounds around his remodeled farmhouse in northern Vancouver.
“These pieces were meant to express the instantaneous flash of visual and spirit inspirations that come and go so rapidly,” said Stewart. “These drawings are simple expressions of the spirit of the garden to pass on to future generations.”
It is fitting that his work focuses on the beauty of the natural landscape of Southwest Washington since he donated 12 acres of land on the Burnt Bridge Creek for use as a conservancy. It was Stewart and his wife Betty’s hope that this property could be saved from urban development and preserved as a natural arboretum and wildlife refuge. The Stewarts’ donation was a catalyst for moving the green belt idea forward which ultimately led to the creation of a 100-acre park now named “Stewart Glen,” encompassing Burnt Bridge Creek.

"Preparing a New Generation of Educators and Leaders"
Wednesday, December 05, 2007
“Preparing a New Generation of Educators and Leaders: Whole Systems Design Innovations in Higher Education and at Learning Gardens.”
A talk by PSU Professor Pramod Parajuli
Professor Pramod Parajuli, Ph.D., Founder and Executive Director of the Portland International Initiative for Leadership in Ecology, Culture and Learning (PIIECL) at PSU will present on this cutting edge interdisciplinary graduate program. Begun in 2002, the masters program has attracted 100 plus students, 35 of whom have graduated. PIEECL houses the “Learning Gardens Program,” which in any week serves 300-400 Portland Public School students and at risk youth involved in hands-on interdisciplinary, multi-sensory, intergenerational, and multicultural learning. Learning Garden students study points along the continuum from soil to supper, food to foodshed, and water to watershed.
The Learning Garden connects food and garden-based education to sustainable livelihoods. Plans for the program include educating young people about energy efficient design and technologies ranging from green building, closed-loop energy production, solar and wind energy, rain water harvest and food production. The initiative has also begun a EPA award winning innovation called the “WISE: Schools as Ecosystem Design.”
This event is recommended for all people interested in how learning situations, including formal ones, can be hands-on and experiential. Parajuli’s work also models new ways of forming interdisciplinary and thematic units around different forms of learning gardens.
