In Spring 2009 the WSU College of Education (COE) received approval from the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE) after a thorough multi-campus review of the teacher education and continuing education programs and many individual and panel interviews involving faculty and staff for the programs. 

Doctor of Education in Teacher Leadership Program Begins


In Fall 2009 WSU Vancouver Education Department began officially offering the Doctor of Education in Teacher Leadership in addition to its Doctor of Education in Educational Leadership.  The program is designed as a 4 year program, with 2 summer institutes at the Pullman WSU campus. Deaf Education Endorsement Program Launches


In the Fall semester of 2009 Washington State University Vancouver began to offer a three semester program leading to certification as a teacher of deaf and hard of hearing children. All coursework is online through WashingtonStateUniversity’s Distance Learning Program. Students may begin the program either in the fall or summer semester each year, and may choose a 1 or 2 year option for completion of the endorsement.

This intensive program will consist of 35 credit hours covering such topics as:

  • The psychological and educational aspects of hearing loss
  • Understanding hearing loss and how to use technology to help students learn
  • Language and speech development and how to develop these abilities in deaf and hard of hearing children
  • Effective instructional strategies for various educational settings
  • Practicum and student teaching in educational programs across the state

In addition to completing all coursework students will be required to pass the WEST-E test on Education of Deaf and Hard of Hearing Children.

 The program, designed for current teachers or those now in teaching education, is the only one in the region offering students the opportunity to prepare to teach in auditory/oral, English based sign, or American Sign Language classrooms. It is designed to fill a gap in the Pacific Northwest for teachers needing certification in this growing field.
