Assistant Professor
Fine Arts

DESCRIPTION: Seeking artist with an active exhibition record for a full-time, tenure-track position at the level of Assistant Professor. The successful candidate will have a demonstrable engagement with contemporary art practice and discourse, and the desire to help build the Fine Arts program at a satellite campus. Duties include the development of an innovative, interdisciplinary foundations program. Teaching assignment includes four undergraduate classes per year, including 2D foundations (in a facility currently limited to 2D)and classes in the candidate’s secondary studio area. Other responsibilities include undergraduate advising, teaching non-majors, and service to the department and university.

QUALIFICATIONS:
Applicants are sought with creative activity and research relating to art foundations, with a secondary emphasis to be determined by the candidate.

Required:

  • MFA at time of application
  • Relevant ability to coordinate the foundations area

Preferred:

  • Demonstrated knowledge and ability to work effectively with individuals and groups with a variety of identities, cultures, backgrounds, and ideologies in a global environment
  • Demonstrated ability to teach at the university level (beyond TA)
  • Evidence of building a strong exhibition record
  • Cross-disciplinary approach to art practice, and expertise in contemporary approaches, concepts, and critical issues

LOCATION: Washington State University, ranked as a Tier One Research Institution, is a multi-campus comprehensive land grant institution with a commitment to undergraduate and graduate instruction, research and extension. The Vancouver campus (est. 1989) offers undergraduate and graduate instruction for the southwest area of the state. It is a rapidly growing campus, with a current enrollment of 2,300 expected to grow to 6,000 in the coming years. WSU Vancouver is located across the Columbia River from Portland, OR and offers significant opportunities for creative activity, a variety of neighboring institutions, galleries, and agencies for collaboration, and an excellent quality of life.

PROGRAM: The new hire will be a part of the Fine Arts Department and the College of Liberal Arts on the WSU Vancouver campus. The program operates out of a modern facility with an integrated set of studios, that includes-- a new Macintosh-based imaging lab, black and white darkroom, and foundations and printmaking studio. All Fine Arts faculty at WSU Vancouver are formally a part of the Department of Fine Arts, which is based on the Pullman, WA campus. The department statewide has a full-time faculty of ten professionally active artists and three art historians.

Washington State University invites applications and nominations for the position of Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs at Washington State University Vancouver (WSU Vancouver).

WSU Vancouver is an innovative, non-residential research university dedicated to offering premier undergraduate and graduate educational and research experiences. WSU Vancouver is one of four campuses that comprise Washington State University, Washington’s land-grant university and a Tier 1 research institution. WSU Vancouver is experiencing tremendous growth and change and seeks an energetic, experienced visionary to lead its development into the next stage of institutional maturity and academic excellence.  As chief academic officer of the campus, the Vice Chancellor provides leadership in academic matters and reports to the Chancellor.  The Vice Chancellor is responsible for academic development, coordination of academic programs, and development of infrastructure to support quality research and teaching.  The Vice Chancellor is responsible for internal and external reviews, including accreditation.  The Vice Chancellor is also required to coordinate and collaborate with administrators from WSU’s three other campuses (Pullman, Spokane and Tri-Cities); local and regional community colleges; and with other universities. The Assistant Vice Chancellor, Director of Research and Graduate Education, 7 directors of academic units (Nursing, Human Development, Business, Liberal Arts, Science, Education and Engineering), including one director of a separately accredited division of a college, Director of the Library, faculty fellow, and (2) professional staff report to the Vice-Chancellor position.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Lead faculty in the development and implementation of plans that project the research and academic priorities of the campus and inform the state and region about initiatives.
  • Advance the university’s commitment to diversity and multiculturalism among the faculty, staff, and students and in research, teaching and community outreach activities, with relevant programs, goals and activities.
  • Lead campus-wide initiatives, such as strategic planning, program implementation, evaluation, accreditation, and assessment.
  • Participate directly in faculty affairs and the campus library, including involvement in hiring recommendations, evaluations, annual reviews, and tenure and promotion processes. 
  • Serve as the primary academic liaison to the University through participation on the University Council of Deans, Campus Vice Chancellors, and other leadership positions of WSU.  
  • Lead and participate in campus committees, such as the Chancellor’s Cabinet, Campus Council, and Budget Council.  Provide primary leadership role for Academic Council.
  • Coordinate efforts among and between academic, administrative, and support units on campus.  Mediate and resolve individual or campus disputes and complaints through solution-oriented practices
  • Support and collaborate with counterparts across all WSU campuses. 
  • Serve as the lead on collaborations with community college partners.
  • Establish and maintain partnerships with the community through service on various boards, councils, and committees.
  • Provide campus and academic links in support of economic and community development efforts.
  • Represent the Chancellor as needed.
  • Assume other duties/responsibilities as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Earned doctorate and the eligibility for appointment as full professor with tenure
  • Demonstrated excellence as an academic leader; with a minimum of 5 years of relevant higher education administrative experience
  • Demonstrated commitment to, and expertise in, promoting diversity and working with broadly diverse constituencies

Assistant Professor, Environmental Science and Justice
Science Programs

The Science Programs at Washington State University Vancouver invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor position in environmental science and justice.

We seek a colleague whose research focuses on scientific issues that disproportionately affect populations along cultural, economic and/or racial boundaries. The area of research emphasis is expected to be in the biological or physical sciences. Areas of study may include, but are not limited to, environmental health and toxicology, human health and nutrition; epidemiology or ecology of disease; human effects on air, water and ecosystems, including climate change; effects of natural disturbance on human populations; and the study of rural-urban interfaces. Candidates whose interests complement existing faculty strengths, can collaborate with disciplines outside science, and possess experience in mentoring students from under-represented populations are desired. The successful candidate must demonstrate the ability to establish an externally-funded research program. Teaching duties may include undergraduate and graduate courses, plus mentoring graduate students and directing graduate student research.

Required Qualifications: Ph.D. in a scientific discipline; research addressing environmental justice issues; ability to establish an externally funded research program.

The successful candidate will be a dynamic and collaborative individual who applies mathematical or statistical techniques to biological, physical and/or environmental problems. Area of specialization is open, but exceptional scholars who complement the strengths of existing science faculty are encouraged to apply.
