WSU Vancouver Chancellor's Research Excellence Award

The Chancellor's Award for Research Excellence recognizes outstanding scholarly achievement over the past year by a member of the WSU Vancouver faculty.

This year's recipient is Dr. Joe Cote, Associate Professor in the Department of Marketing at Washington State University Vancouver. He has also served as Business Program Director and Associate Dean of Academic Affairs at WSU Vancouver.

Dr. Cote's research has two primary themes. The first theme is methodological and statistical. His current primary research involves the application of stakeholder theory. Dr. Cote has developed a new course at WSU Vancouver: Resources, Stakeholders, and Competitive Advantage and is currently working on several studies examining how business people use influence tactics. His second research theme is logo design. This stream of research broke ground in marketing for the intersection between aesthetics and marketing. Dr. Cote has one of the most productive research records in the College of Business for publications in what the college calls majors or 'A'-level journals.

Dr. Cote's impact on community has been meaningful. His work with logo design has been heralded by executives at organizations such as Kodak for providing useful direction for their marketing strategy. Dr. Cote has used his statistical expertise to volunteer for the MAP program in Clark County which tutors high school students in areas of math and science to prepare them for success in their studies.

"Seeing a student be the first to graduate from their family knowing how exceptionally they performed is very moving. Not only does the student now [and] have many more opportunities [after earning a degree], but society has also benefited," said Cote.
